Lenovo Y500 WiFi Centrino N2230 dropping connections issue

Hey guys,

 

I just got the Lenovo Y500 a few months ago and it came with the Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230.

 

The WiFi on this laptop kept on disconnecting after a while of use, at first I thought it was the laptop's problem but after I got a replacement because of a depixel on my screen the problem still occurs - the WiFi is unstable sometimes and the connection just disappears. I tried this with other Wifi connections at my University and home and friend's house but it still kept on disconnecting after a while.

 

Can anyone please give me a solution to this problem? I've already downloaded and installed the latest drivers.

 

Symptoms of this problem:

1. Disconnects after a while, it shows network available but I cannot connect to them

2. Sometimes, it doesn't show any network (i.e all my WiFi connections are not visible)

3. I cannot restart my WiFi because I go into Windows 8 "Change pc settings" and it says I cannot turn off my WiFi

 

This problem is really bugging me because every time this happens I have to restart my laptop!

 

I would really appreciate your help!

There are many possibilities to your problem. To jumpstart, examine the settings of your wifi card (based on recommended setup) and the router's settings. They should match.

After playing about with pretty much every setting I solved it by disabling the 802.11 N mode in the driver settings. 

 

Device Manager > Network Adapters > Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 > right click properties > Advanced Tab > 802.11 N mode > disable 

 

Worked for me anyway. "

Hi kw2013,

 

You've highlighted your wired network controller.  That won't have the tab you're looking for.

 

It also appears that you have a Broadcom wifi card, not an Intel card.

 

[edit] Strange, since the ipbook only shows Y500 with the Intel card. What's the model type of your machine - like 1234-xyz or an 8-digit number?

Anyway I don't understand what you mean by model number but I took a photo of the label on the box with the S/N numbers and all that and maybe you can see here....

So where do I download the drivers for broadcom? I searched it and installed it but it still says "not bound to transport driver".....

You know what, just boot to safemode. Open device manager in the control panel. Click network adapter. Choose Broadcom 802.11n network adapter. Right click and choose properties. Select device driver and uninstall. When a prompt appear put a check in the box that says "delete .." then click ok. Reboot the laptop and try connecting to the internet. In short, just use Windows 8 driver for your wifi card.

 

Note: you may have to provide the ssid and security to connect to your router once again due to the fact that the deletion of the driver also deletes the profile.

This has been a real problem for a while but...I'm quite sure I have found the solution! In Device Manager/Network Adapters/(your wireless)/Advanced there is a setting called "Roaming Aggressiveness". What this does is try to balance performance and connectivity. On my network (and I'm sure most others) there are several wi-fi possibilities, so when performance drops on the primary network it disconnects and tries to find another network. Of course, the other networks aren't connected so the wi-fi goes belly up. I have set this option to "lowest" so the wireless client will not roam (looking for another network). I haven't lost the connection all day(!) and I haven't noticed any difference in performance. Give it a try!
