Lenovo Y510P Keyboard problem

2014-12-15, 7:08 AM

So, I started using my laptop today and randomly the 'q' key started typing itself.

I use a Wireless keyboard and rarely touch the laptop keyboard, so I am not sure why this problem started.

What I tried -

1) I disabled wireless keyboard and still 'q' kept on typing. (So, not a wireless keyboard problem)

2) I removed the laptop 'q' key and cleaned it and place it back again.

(Even when the key was removed 'q' kept on typing on screen - magic)

3) I started the system in safe mode and still 'q' kept on typing

4) I reset BIOS, removed battery and connected again and still 'q' kept on typing.

My final solution was to go to Device Manager and Install a crap (Incompatible) driver for my laptop keyboard, which essentially stopped it from working.

Now, I am using the wireless keyboard to post this message and the laptop keyboard is disabled.

Can anyone please identify the root cause of this problem?

I have never spilled any liquid on my laptop. I will try identifying the problem tomorrow, all help is appreciated.

Thanks.

hi rockykoston,

Ideally, if the fault is with the keyboard keys or with the keyboard ribbon, replacing the keyboard will fix it.

if the fault is with the keyboard pressing the keyboard ribbon too hard (that causes the Q key to continuously display on the screen) or the keyboard connector itself then I recommend you contact lenovo for service as there;s likely an additional part hat needs to be replaced (eg. motherboard).

Regards

hi rockykoston,

From your observation and troubleshooting, I fear that the keyboard is malfunctioning. You can try using keyboard testing software like Passmark's KeyboardTest to verify the functionality of the keyboard.

In addition, you can try and reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 44-47 of the HMM). If that doesn't work, you may need to contact lenovo on how to go about getting the keyboard replaced.

Hey Neo, Thanks for the reply.

I will try to re-seat the keyboard after work today.

Any idea if I need to clean the keyboard or the ribbon? I mean can I clean anything just to make sure that it is fine?

Also, Can you please provide a link where I can check if warranty is available for me.

I bought the system in US but am in Mexico now. So, is the warranty available in Mexico?

Yeah, you could clean the keyboard ribbon and the keyboard connector in the motherboard using compressed air and see if that works. Otherwise, you may contact lenovo mexico for International Warranty.

Well I disassembled, cleaned and reconnected all parts but still the problem remains. I guess the entire keyboard is faulty or maybe the ribbon is faulty.

I will just disable it and not use it anymore. If any further problem arises, then I will contact Lenovo warranty. Thanks for the help.

Hey Neo,

I am planning to buy a new keyboard to replace the faulty one. I am not sure if its the keyboard which is faulty or something else.

Is there any way of knowing whether my problem will be solved if I buy a new keyboard?
