Lenovo Y510P fan making really loud noise.

I never had this problem before until recently I noticed that my fan was making this loud buzzing noise. It was bearable at first. I thought that the fan might be dusty inside because I haven't cleaned it ever since I bought it. Last week, I tried to open the laptop so I can check why it is making that loud noise. I saw that the fan was dirty. I tried cleaning it. When I turned on my laptop, it was still making that loud buzzing noise. So I just ignored it. After a week, It suddenly got louder. It didn't sound normal anymore. I tried restarting the laptop but it still makes that noise. Its annoying. I took a video so you can hear what my fan is making.

It just keeps doing like this even if my laptop is just on stanby, like I'm not doing anything with it. This is what it sounds like when I did the Dust Removal tool on Energy Management.

Since I kept using the Dust Removal tool.. Now its making this weird noise, like the fan is getting stuck on something.

I don't know what to do anymore. Its been 2 years since I bought this laptop so I don't have anymore warranty and I never had problems with my laptop except for today. I have never dropped it so I don't know why this is happening to my laptop. Please help me. Smiley Sad

Re: Lenovo Y510P fan making really loud noise.

Hi there, Xbelleh -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

This video would leave me to believe that a piece of paper or other debris shifted inside and is now coming in contact with the fan blades.

When you use the dedusting cycle the debris is temporarily being blown out of the way of the blades.  What I would do is use a can of compressed air and blow out the fan assembly from both directions and see what is blown out.  Compress air is available at any office supply store, electronics store or big box discount store.  When using the compressed air use short bursts as an extended burst may damage the fan's bearings from over revving.

Also, when using the laptop take note of its position.  If the fan is quiet on a flat surface, but is noisy when sitting at an angle like on your lap.  That might be a good indication that the fan bearings are failing.

Worst case scenario is you need a fan replacement.  The fan is something that the owner can replace if you are comfortable working inside it.

As a do-it-yourself project it can be fixed in an afternoon. At this point I would try the compress air and we'll go from there.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Lenovo Y510P fan making really loud noise.

Thank you for your response!

I did try moving it to a different angle to check if thats the problem but its still makes the loud noise either if its reclined or in flat surface. Do you really think that its there is something stuck inside the fan blade or there is still more dust inside even though I already cleaned the fans when I opened it last week?

Update:

So I used a compressed air to try if it will work. I was spraying it near the vents of the laptop and I could hear the fans moving and the sound that is making was the same loud buzzing sound I am hearing right now but slower.

I don't really understand what is happening with it right now because sometimes the sound is changing. Sometimes its quiet then it gets loud again after a few minutes. When I restart sometimes it makes the sound but its not that loud then when I move the laptop a little bit it gets louder again. Smiley Sad

Re: Lenovo Y510P fan making really loud noise.

Fan is very loud when the CPU load increases. Possible causes could be dried lubrication in the fan, worn bearings, or just a dust build up. Hence try cleaning the fan once.

If CPU is running very hot. Applications like tp fan control can tell you the temperature of the CPU and GPU temps above 80C under load are high, and above 90C suggest that the fan or heatsink could be clogged.

  1. Did you do a BIOS/driver update recently? Click here to update the latest BIOS driver.
  1. If you open up your task manager, do you see any processes that are consuming high percentages of CPU?
  1. Also run virus scan with the latest virus definitions and check for no viruses or malware.
  1. You should also install a temp monitoring program and post what your temps are.

If all these doesn’t work, then Contact Service center for further assistance.

Re: Lenovo Y510P fan making really loud noise.

Thank you for helping me with my laptop's problem. I really appreaciate your reponses.

I cleaned the fan of my laptop today, there's no more dust inside so it doesnt make that loud noise anymore but now it just makes this grinding sound similar to this sound:

So is it the fan's problem? Do I have to replace it soon?

Update:

Its still makes that loud noise Smiley Sad so the dust inside is not the problem.

Update again:

I tried lubricating the fan. I'm still observing it. I dont hear the grinding sound anymore. Hopefully lubricating the fan will resolve my issue Smiley Happy
