Lenovo Y560 immediately turns off

Hello,

When I power on my Y560, the leds and ideapad logo glows, then the laptop turns off after 1 second.
I have tried the below :
i.) Run via power adapater (battery removed)

ii.) Run via battery (adapter disconnected)

iii.) Run after removing RAM 2x2GB(tried interchanging the slots)

Came across an article, where similar issue was tackled by re-applying thermal paste (between heatsink and processor). So, have ordered for the same. While I wait, wanted to check if there are there any other checks which can identify the problem ? Any fixes without HW change ?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Lenovo Y560 immediately turns off

Welcome to the Forums Last!

Try remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your laptop, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the laptop. This clears your RAM and is like a hardware reset. Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord and turn your laptop on.

Let us know how you get on.

Shashi

Re: Lenovo Y560 immediately turns off

I generally do that before opening up a laptop, so that i don't get jolted by the residual current.
And, as I mentioned, even tried removing the RAM (RAM dump), so, what you are suggesting is also done.

What are your thoughts about the thermal paste (between heatsink & processor) theory ? Could that be the cause of this ? And any thing else ?

Re: Lenovo Y560 immediately turns off

Hi lastwish42

You could check out these things -

1) Press the NOVO button and see if the laptop is able to boot into recovery

2) Remove the HDD and try starting the laptop

3) Remove the RAM and try starting it (Not sure if you removed both sticks)

4) Disconnect any external peripherals if you have and try to restart.

5) Change the socket where your laptop is plugged in and connect to a different place.

Re: Lenovo Y560 immediately turns off

Hi,

Firstly, my apologies for the late reply.

1.) I deleted the hidden partition containing the recovery image and currently using ArchLinux, so can't try NOVO option.

2.) I forgot to mention this earlier, already tried after removing HDD, didn't work.

3.) Tried removing RAM. Removed both of them. Even tried inter-changing them.

4.) Am not able to keep my laptop running even for 2 seconds, so no logic in trying for a restart. No peripherals connected either.

5.) This ain't a power issue, mostly something to do with the processor. Even then, tried what you suggested. Didn't work.

Would it be suggested to remove and re-connect the processor ? Or will that cause any issue?
Also, the thermal paste is to be only applied between heatsink & processor or should be applied else where aswell?

Thanks for the replies.

Re: Lenovo Y560 immediately turns off

Sorry man, I have little idea about the thermal paste fix. This problem is a bummer for my current skills Smiley Tongue

My guess would have been a motherboard failure, but that can only be identified by someone with physical access to the device.

Re: Lenovo Y560 immediately turns off

I would suggest you to visit the nearest authorised Lenovo authorised support. Since doing anything would harm the system board or might void the warranty.
