Lenovo Y580 Bug

2012-06-25, 23:16 PM

Hi, everybody! I just bought a new Lenovo Y580 laptop off the Lenovo website. It was shipped to my house and there were no problems. I opened it up and everything was great! However, when I used the NVIDIA GTX 660m graphics card to play a game, I got small weird red/blue/green pixel flashes and eventually the game I would play would crash. I next got a message saying, "Display Driver NVIDIA Windows Kernal Mode Driver, Version 295.55 stopped responding and has successfully recovered." This happens everytime I use the NVIDIA graphics and its really irritating me. The HD Intel 4000 graphics works perfectly fine though. Please help me guys! Thank you so much!

At least you got your Y580.  I've had 5 estimated ship dates with today being the latest and it still hasn't shipped.  Guess its time to rethink my purchase.  You would think a company of this size could do a better job managing their inventory and meeting customer expectations.

Enjoy your new machine. . .

Try using Mamoza's solution:

"Right click on my computer, go to property, then in left margin select: advanced system settings, third tab, called "Advanced" First option :  Performance click on "settings", select "adjust for performance" that will uncheck everything, then you can keep the 3th and 4th from the end checked (smooth edges on screen fonts & smooth-scroll list box, if you want the webpages text to look the way they should..  quite essential to keep the font thing..)"

Okay so updating the drivers fixed the crashing problem! Thanks so much for that solution. But to my other problem, the large pixel groups flashing still occurs when I used the NVIDIA graphics card. Could it possibly be a hardware issue?

Oh and sorry about giving you wrong info. The random pixel groups flashing are only pinkish red colors. There is no green and blue.

nabb701, did you use the nvidia drivers or the one from the lenovo site? I used the nvidia drivers and though the crash did happen at a later time, it did eventually still happen.

It sounds similar to issues people were having with the y570 when it first came out. Lenovo uses possibly the worst thermal paste ever invented. Some kind of green gunky looking crap. It has horrible thermal dissipation, and barely keeps the cpu/gpu cool enough to run. I would recommend using ThrottleStop 1.10, to keep a close eye on your temps. They should be no higher than 80-85 for the GPU while gaming. My guess is they're hitting 95+, and it's panicking the driver. This is all my opinion of course :D

I would not be surprised.  The heat coming out of the fan on the side is really really hot when gaming...I'll check to see if your recommendation helps.  Thanks.
