Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

Good evening everyone,

Me and my brother have recently acquired 2 "Lenovo Y580Intel Core i7 3630QM 6GB 750GB GeForce GTX660M 15.6in DVDRW USB3.0 Windows 8 Notebook". We acquired those mainly for gaming because the specs led us to believe that we would be able to get good performance out of them. However, after updating all the drivers and installing a few games (like metro 2033 and The Secret World) we noticed very poor performances and very low FPS (never over 30, with extreme fps drops at some points) at medium quality graphics on one of 2 computers.

The other seems to be unable to use the Nvidia card for graphics. When we start The Secret World, we get a message saying "The computer is below minimum requirements and will cause The Secret World to have bad performance and be unstable. Please upgrade it to meet the requirements". When we try to change the overall quality to medium, we get a message saying "Preset not available. The selected setting requires 371MB of VRAM (32MB available). Try reducing the resolution or select a lower preset,", So far I have tried re-installing the drivers a few times and even reinstalling everything after reverting the computer to factory settings.

Anyone have any idea of what could be causing these issues? Is it a software problem or a hardware problem?

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

HI NotoriousQV,

Thanks for posting and welcome to the community. Sorry to hear about the issue your facing as the Y580 is a very powerful machine to own.

In regards to your issue, A while back we had similar issues to your where low FPS is being displayed. However it was found to be the Mcafee to have taken a loft of the resouces. and by uninstalling it did the trick.

Another option you could do is to uninstall the lenovo energy management and let run with the windows power management. See if that did the trick.

Do let me know how it goes.

Re: Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

Thanks a lot for your quick reply NINE!

I did as you told me (uninstalling McAfee and Power Management) and i have noticed a major drop in the frequency and severity of FPS drops!

Would you happen to have any idea on what could be causing the issue on the second computer? It is like it cannot use the GeForce even though the computer detects it and the drivers are properly (i think) installed. I do not know if this would help, but when i installed the drivers, the computer did not ask for a restart...which is weird because the driver installation asked for a restart, after which the issue was resolved.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

PS: Thanks a lot for solving the issue on the first computer!!!

Re: Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

Hi NotoriousQV,

The Admins, mod,Gurus, Specialis Staff and Employees are always here to assist as best as we can and glad to here one of the issues has been rectified for the first machine.

Now, in regards to to the second machine you might want to consider checking your BIOS. You'll need to access your BIOS upon boot and once in the BIOS go to the configurations Tab. In the Congurations tab, under the Graphic Device, ensure that it has been set to Switchable rather than UMA.

Hope this helps and please do let me know.

Re: Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

Hi,

I checked the BIOS and the Graphic Device is set on Switchable Graphics. I am under the impression that even though it is detected by the computer, the device is not working properly.

Any advice on what I should do next?

Re: Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

Hi NotoriousQV,

Sorry for the delay in reply. Just been tied up with some other issue. I was checking on issue and you may want to try updating your Nvidia Drivers. The link can be found below.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_MY/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS031412

On another note, if you do not see any changes from the link I provided above, you may want to consider downloading the drivers directly fro mthe Nvidia site. Click on the lick below to download directly.

hope this helps and do post your results.

Re: Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

Hi,

Thanks for your response. Updating the drivers is the first thing I did after the initial set up of the machine. I even tried reverting to factory settings in order to attempt a new driver update. I get the same error message message and am unable to play games due to terrible FPS.

Re: Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

Hi NotoriousQV,

I checked further on your issue and If you go to the Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D settings > Program Settings Tab, are the preferred settings set correctly?

I still can't put my finger on the causes at this point as at this point I'm assuming that there could be a hardware issue on the particular machine you have. But I'm only guessing at this point. As a last resort I would suggest you to contact our service team to get it checked out. But before doing so we'll try to see what other option you have left.

Another thing I want you to try is to go to the Windows power option (In control panel) > "Change Plan Settings" > "Change Advance Power settings. Anew window will appear and you will see a drop down menu and set that menu to Lenovo Dynamic Graphics.

Hope this helps.

Re: Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

I get the feeling that optimus has somehow gone bonkers and it's running games with the intel integrated chip instead of the GTX660M. Right click on the game's icon and go to "run with graphics processor" and select "high performance Nvidia processor"  It should actually say default next to "high performance Nvidia processor" if optimus is working correctly. If it says default next to integrated graphics instead you could change the default by clicking on "change the default graphics processor..."

Re: Lenovo Y580 Nvidia GTX660M issues

Even right-clicking the game's .exe file to run with high performance graphics is a little wonky. If the Nvidia drivers are properly installed, the best way to go about this optimus issue is to right-click on your desktop, go to "Nvidia control panel" and then click "manage 3D settings." Click the "program settings" tab and click "add." Now find your game's launcher file (.exe). Finally select the "high performance Nvidia processor" for the program and click "apply." Some games (older titles) come with a separate configuration program, so it may be wise to do the same for the configuration program too.
