Lenovo Z40 External GPU Compatible?

Hello! I have had my Lenovo Z40 with NVidia 820M for a couple years now. I got it for gaming. Unfortunatly, I was uneducated about GPUs at the time, and I tend to have to run most games at Medium to Low settings, at about 20 FPS. I want to get better. Because of how much I move around from place to place, I can't get a desktop, so I want to try an external GPU. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this, and if so, did it work. I am thinking about getting an NVidia 900 series or 1000 series. Thanks -saddlepiggy

Re: Lenovo Z40 External GPU Compatible?

Hi saddlepiggy ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As with most laptops , discrete GPU chips are soldered on the board and is not upgradable.

Costing of diy of an eGPU has not been tried to this model afaik and that costing would be higher than just purchasing another laptop with higher GPU benchmark.

Hope this help answer your query.

Re: Lenovo Z40 External GPU Compatible?

Hi saddlepiggy ,

Greetings.

On the stock devices and BIOS not be able to detect / allow but it is possible theoretically having other means as there are claims tried on some models

Definitely I would not suggest that you go right ahead on purchasing egpu set up unless you already have it or have someone that can give it a try  . As per OEM design and expected performance , egpu is not intended for this machine.

Sure be nice if we can have fellow members to be able to test it on eGPU set up. I tried looking for Z40 series setup but got none so far. Device error detection can be a roadblock.

Regards

Re: Lenovo Z40 External GPU Compatible?

Just to clarify, if it did not work, would it damage my computer?

Re: Lenovo Z40 External GPU Compatible?

Hi saddlepiggy  ,

As eGPU is more of a modification of the normal built expected by the manufacturer , it would be best to review more on how the set up works as we do not want any harm on your machine.

You may consult more on the manufacturer of the eGPU kit / service center or guidelines on how you are planning to connect an external GPU .  Again modification of the original set up is part of the limitation of your covered warranty and is therefore not suggested . Possibilities thou is a lot as technology would offer.
