THANK YOU. I've been working on this issue for hours. After a recent automatic driver update, my screen's brightness was stuck at 100%. I tried disabling and re-enabling the driver, uninstalling and re-installing it, reverting the update (that option was greyed out), installing F.lux (didn't work to dim my screen!), rebooting my computer, running antivirus programs. . . . Nothing worked until your suggestion to revert back to the old Windows 8 drivers! I'm using Windows 10 so I never would've thought to do that, but your suggestion worked perfectly. Thank you so much!!

This works! ... Until my computer reverts to the newest driver, which it does at least once (sometimes twice) a day. Then my brightness again becomes unresponsive and I have to go through the whole process again of reverting to the Win 8 video driver. Is there any way to make it "stick"?

If you're tryiung to prevent the new intel driver from reinstalling, I have a fix that has worked for me.
First off, make sure you have installed the older 8.1 driver, then let windows update install the latest driver from intel.
From there, right click on your start menu button and go to device manager.
Go to the Display Adapter section and right click on Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000, then choose "Update Driver Software..."
Next choose the option "Browse my computer for driver software"
Then choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
From there, choose an older version of the Intel Graphics Driver from the list provided (A date should appear next to each driver). Click next and an older version of the graphics driver should then be installed, and stay installed.

Thanks! The compatibility mode in the setup.exe made it work for me.
I used the setup.exe on 220.127.116.1123 folder to make the installation.
My laptop is the Z400 touch.
