Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

I have a Lenovo Z510 laptop which turns off randomly while plugged in. It started intially only while playing games but then happened even while watching videos and browsing. Each time the interval got shorter and in the last stage it turned off the moment I inserted the charger pin. This never happens when its on battery so it not a overheating issue. I tried changing the charging adapter but it did not go away so I figured charger is not the problem. Then as a final solution got my Motherboard replaced and it went away but only for a month. Now even with a new mother board it randomly turns off while watching a video.

Im really perplexed as to what could be the reason of such shutdowns. I really need to figure it out so it can replaced under warranty.

Re: Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

Hi vinayk23 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There was a BIOS update for power issue on this model .

I would not however advise you to do it on your own since it may need constant ac connection and we do not want shutdowns to happen during the BIOS update as it may brick the pc .

I would rather have you call in tech support for assistance and back up your important files first for safe keep.

BIOS is already updated to the latest version. This is not a charging problem. I feels its related to the graphic chip on the motherboard which is triggering the shutdown.

Re: Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

Hi vinayk23 ,

Same shutdown as you have described may also happen to a failed post if issue is with the graphics card embedded on the board . As what you may suspect , the more that we contact tech support for the appropriate service .

Update us how it goes , U.S. tech support is available 24 /7 .

Same problem. Before turning off once a month. Then more. Now, several times a day. After switching off the power is no longer working correctly driver appears that the power adapter is supported by limited and after a reboot feature better battery life is deactivated. If reset by holding the power button for 30-40 seconds while the computer is turned off, all normalized to the next trip. I have two systems are installed and off take place on each.

Re: Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

Today has verified using the Kaspersky Rescue Disk with Linux. Viruses not found. The computer worked four and a half hours, it is strongly heated up and never shut down. Then I switched to Windows. Computer shut down three times working no more than five minutes. So it may not be a hardware problem.

Re: Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

Hi MikhailT ,

Greetings.

If works ok with a different OS then most likely you would need to call in tech support as with BIOS update neccessary .

The firmware synch with how windows would maintain and read battery capacity for power conservation and keeping battery health . False readout would automatically trigger shut down to protect the machine.

Better if you back up files and have the tech guys perform it for you just in case that there would be issue during the process. BIOS update can be done by endusers as this would not void the warranty but since it may lead to disruption of power due to ac status have this documented with the tech guys as needed.

Update us .

Regards

Re: Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

Update:

I just removed the battery and plugged the charger. So my laptop was just running on AC power.

So far no shut downs and it runs fine. I played some videos and played a game for 10 minutes but nothing happened so far.

Could the battery be bad ? Battery works fine when it is not plugged in. What could be causing this ?

Re: Lenovo Z510 random shutdown while plugged in

Hi vinayk23 ,

At this point we got a replaced motherboard with updated BIOS, would crash when plugged in  but ok without the battery (on ac alone ) and with battery only  .

What if you try playing video while booted on a different OS like boot from a rescue media like MikhailT  tried and see how it would work both without battery and with battery alone.

I was thinking of power managers software/ services / firmware BIOS  that turns off the pc versus possible hardware issue.

Have your warranty checked out and data backed up if that leads to repair service.
