I have a Lenovo Z580 that came pre-installed with Windows 7. I would like to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 without destroying any of the partitions so that if I do not like Windows 8.1 I can use the recovery feature to reinstall Windows 7 and all original drivers. I apologize if this has been addressed elsewhere in the forums.
I do understand that there is not a direct path to upgrade from Windows 7 to 8.1. You have to upgrade to Windows 8 first. However, I have never been a fan of OS upgrades. I intend on doing a fresh 8.1 install. My data is backed up.

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
If you are planning to upgrade from Windows 7 and thinking about having a backup that would let you go back to WIndows 7 anytime,
If I were in your post, Since I still have Windows 7 I can use the One key Recovery 7 which still has the Create Recovery Disc option.
I would create a set of Recovery Disc then proceed with the upgrade,
It is hard to say that the recovery Option built to the hard drive may or may not have an issue after OS upgrades.
So while in Windows 7, Create you Windows 7 Recovery Disc then proceed with your upgrades.
Hope this helps

1. You don't need to install Win 8 first to upgrade from Win 7 to 8.1:
2. If you've already purchased Win 8,
