Lenovo Z580 won't start up

Hello,

I'm trying to fix my son's Z580 which refuses to startup.

I am pretty sure it's not a software issue, as it won't boot of a DVD or USB either.

I have tried a memory swap. It own't even boot into BIOS setup.

The lights flash, the HDD spins for a second and then it shuts down.

Sometimes it keeps repeating that.

Hope anyone has a clue, it's a bit soon to write this one off, because it's just not even 3 years old.

Cheers,

Hans

I had the same issue with my other laptop, apparently it was the moherboard that had died.

However, try booting to BIOS without HDD or try to replace the ram to the other slot that is there. It sometimes help things get started.

Re: Lenovo Z580 won't start up

Hello,

No, I had the HDD disconnected.

Didn't work either. I was sort of hoping anyone could point me to some flaw in this laptop.

I have seen the same issue come up in Google, but no real solutions.

Before I dismantle this laptop; is it one single unit? I mean, there are no extra boards in there, like one to regulate current, video or SATA board?

Replacing the mainboard would be my very last resort.

Cheers,

Hans

Re: Lenovo Z580 won't start up

If you haven't already, inspect the USB ports.  There have been quite a few cases - ThinPads, mostly IIRC - where a bent and shorted USB power pin would cause that quick shutdown.

The repeated on/off cycle that you describe makes this unlikely, but it's worth a quick check.

You can download the hardware maintenance manual to see the parts.

Re: Lenovo Z580 won't start up

Hi,

That's a good one.

Didn't think of that yet.

I will look into it.

Downloading the HMM is a good idea too.

Found this part: LZ3 Power Board (Z580/Z585) FRU 90000202

Could this be faulty?

Cheers,

Hans

It is a possibility. But before doing some test on it try the test on the adapter first as outlined in the manual. Also try running the unit without battery if the adapter checks out fine.
