I have recently bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Z500 and when I start the machine, either from scratch or waking from sleep mode by pressing the power on button, the cd drive pings open. This is really annoying! Does anyone know why? Or how I can get it to stop??
This is the machine:
Lenovo IdeaPad Z500 i3-3120M 6GB 1TB DVDRW 15.6" Win8 - White (59372917) - dabs.com
Also, I only got the machine yesterday - and it has happened from the moment i first switched it on. I have no restore point and dont want to mess around with anything like an uninstall. I just want to know how i can turn this setting (if it is a setting) OFF, Nothing has been installed yet or anything. It is sooooo brand new.

Since the machine is still brand new and you haven't done much with it, I would run the OneKey Recovery program and restore the system back to its original configuration. From what you described it almost sounds like there is a remnant left over from a software installed that is prompting you to insert a CD/DVD. The OneKey Recovery may resolve that issue. Page #23 of your model's User Guide explains how to do a OneKey Recovery.

Sorry I did not see your post sooner. Were you able to resolve the problem? If this happened from the time you first switched the Z500 on, restoring to factory state may not have fixed it.
I'm hoping that you were able to handle this under your warranty for the system..
