Lenovo y500 auto turning on with black screen and loud fan

Hello, my Lenovo y500 laptop has not been working properly after normal shutdown (with fast boot on win8.1 enabled). After plugging AC adapter, laptop turned on by itself (I didn't press power button) but nothing appears on the screen - I hear quite loud fan from inside. So the screen is black, it doesn't even show 'Lenovo' logo. What's more, I can't even turn the laptop off by hitting power button! I can only do that by unplugging AC... Did someone experience such things?

Re: Lenovo y500 auto turning on with black screen and loud fan

Hi shaunzzzy,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Try to plug the laptop into an external display and check if the display would show up.

Press caps lock key to notice if LED would turn on/off.

Above steps are to check if able to complete power on self test of the laptop.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Re: Lenovo y500 auto turning on with black screen and loud fan

Thank you for your meesage. I tried this (using Caps Lock doesn't turn LED on), however the "cycle" stays same - auto turned laptop, black screen and loud fan. I'm thinking whether it's some kind of problem with UEFI/BIOS - I would like to fix/recover/reset BIOS, however I don't know the safest way to do it. The warranty expired so I can't send laptop to service.

It feels like laptop is stuck in a way as it would be after being in hibernation/sleep mode but can't reload (keys don't work).

Re: Lenovo y500 auto turning on with black screen and loud fan

Hi shaunzzzy,

Greetings.

Following the readme txt file from the support site would instruct you how to safely flash the BIOS but I doubt if the machine would be allowed to force boot on it as suggested here.

As this may also endanger soft bricking the motherboard, I would rather that you have it checked with any service center for a no post issue. They would also be able to physically check the power system in the laptop for isolation.

Regards
