Lenovo y580 SSD addition

2012-09-14, 21:54 PM

Hi, recently I bought a lenovo y580 laptop.

I purchased a version with core i7, gtx660M, 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. So there´s no SSD in my laptop.

And I was thinking theoretically, when there are versions of y580 with HDD + SSD configuration available, as well, is my y580 with just HDD exactly the same inside as HDD + SSD versions are ?

Because when there are versions of this laptop available with 2 drive solution, do you think it´s possible to add an SSD to my laptop that doesn´t contain it ?

I mean, I would place it exactly on the place where SSD lies in SSD versions of y580. And then I would use SSD for system and HDD for data.

I don´t know whether this is possible, so I need your help. Thank you ;)

You can do it and it won't void your warranty. AFAIK, you can freely change SSD/WLAN card/RAM/HDD.

Hi, thanks for answer, but I think you misunderstood the question.

I am not looking for a way to install windows on msata drive. I just wanted to know whether it´s possible to add an SSD to my laptop because it doesn´t contain one.

But I´ve found the answer yet. There should be place for mSATA SSD in my laptop, but I don´t know whether I can put it inside without losing the warranty, what do you think ?

Because putting it inside would mean oppening the laptop itself and probably disassembling some components for that purpose.

I have solved this problem!

- Install the msata into the slot. You can access it at the back of your notebook by opening the 2-hole cover.
- set the bios into AHCI

- Boot into windows
- download the software "VeloSSD" trial version 2.0.0.7 from softpedia and do not update to 2.0.1.1 or latest version.
- run and configure the software, yet the limitation of the software is upto 32GB only. However, when you buy it for $9.99 you can set a larger cache size.
- DONE -

Note that the velossd 2.0.0.7 works well with my system. However the latest version will prompt me with error. I already asked the support for this software due to the problem I am experiencing.

Now with my current setup of Y580, I can boot windows 7 within 35secs based from EE boot optimizer.

THIS IS ONLY APPLICABLE IF YOU ARE CONFIGURING YOUR SETUP SSD AS A CACHE.

I thought the Y580's with SSD were Hybrid Drives, that had part of the HDD partitioned off as flash. Unless I'm mistaken? Not sure myself if I can exactly add an SSD to an HDD or not (and keep the optical drive).

If only mine worked.... stupid motherboard/gpu issues.... Sigh.

AalokShah,

That's a common misconception.

I read the service manual, and the fancy version of the Y580 comes with a mechanical drive and an MSATA SSSD.

The cheap version just gets a mechanical drive.

Re: Lenovo y580 SSD addition

Where can I find a good description of setting up an SSD in Y580?

I am looking at Y580 with 1TB HDD and 16MB SSD.  The SSD shows up as Drive 0 [14.91GB] (in disk manager) and it has two partitions:  one partition healthy primary of 10.91GB and another healthy primary partition of 4.00GB.  Both partitions are 100% free.  The SSD and its partitions are not visible in Windows Explorer.

I read about the confusion about whether the SSD should be used to manually install frequently used apps on, or whether it is used transparently by the system to automatically cache data (programs etc) most frequently read from the HDD.  Are there really these two options?  Has anyone measured the benefit of each?

Strangely, it appears that out of the box the SSD is not used in the automatic mode and not configured for the manual mode either.

Any recommendations or tips?
