Max capacity for secondary SSD on Z50-70

2015-02-09, 3:59 AM

I recently bought a Z50-70 with 1TB HDD and I was wondering if I can add a 256GB SSD as a boot drive.

As the ODD interface is SATA it makes sense to move the 1TB drive to the ODD slot using a caddy and install the SSD in the primary SATA-III HDD slot. However, all caddies for Z50-70 indicate they can only support up to 500GB, not sure why. Some cite limitation of the laptop itself. Did anyone try installing a 1TB in the ODD without issues? If so, did it require any BIOS updates (or other modifications)? Which caddy did you use?

I tried Lenovo tech support but apparently they don't know if it's possible.

Many thanks,

Be sure you have last version of BIOS-V29 (download from here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-z-series-laptops/lenovo-z50-70) otherwise you will not be able to use HDD and SSD. Many users of Z50-70 had problems before Lenovo release this BIOS update in December last year.
256GB SSD Kingston and 1TB+8GB SSHD is working very good in my Z50-70 (after BIOS update).
