Re: NO NGFF in Lenovo Y510p

I also bought this model without NGFF slot in Montenegro. The same as in the pictures, there is a hole but no slot itself.

I knew what I was buying, it's a limiting factor, but the price was very attractive, so I believe it was a good buy. Everything else is very good on this computer.

I'm just wondering, is there any chance to somehow manually install the slot later on? I'm afraid I will be bothered by this empty space in the future :)

If not, replacing 2.5" HDD with SSD is a good and less costly option.

I called authorized Lenovo partners in Poland, they do not install stuf like this - soldering stuff into the mainboard without exception results in the loss of warranty :/ They told that even if the slot is soldered, it is not certain, that the firmware will see/recognize the slot.

But you can always do it by yourself, if you do, please let me know how it worked ;)

No, I won't be the first one to mess up my new machine :)

I also thought that it's not that easy, Even though you solder it, you don't know if the BIOS will support it.

So I'll go with 2.5" SSD once I get the budget for that. And find a creative way to fill the NGFF hole with some singing toy or little fungi farm ;)

There is a guy that soldered the connect on and he has not been able to get it to recognize the new slot. The going theory is that there is more than just the actual slot missing (maybe resistors, capacitors, etc) so it will never work.

I see this thread is approaching 3 years old, however interestingly enough I just noticed the person referenced earlier who had soldered on an M.2 slot posted an update this past weekend(in 2017) about how he was able to get it working by soldering on (4) 10nF capacitors and 4 jumpers made from single core copper wire.

This is certainly some advanced solder work, and it looks like it'd be a real bear to do, but I'm definately impressed.
Here is a link to the thread with the update:
