OneKey rescue & Linux -> booting hangs :-(

2010-01-16, 14:54 PM

Hello dear Community!

I've got into a weird trouble.

1. Installed Ubuntu: deleted all partitions, created normal Linux partitions, all is ok.

2. Rebooted many times, all was ok.

3. This morning I pressed OneKey recovery button (occasionally) - and system did not boot.

Now fun begins.

- I rebooted. Boot hangs.

- I powered off and pressed normal power on button. Boot hangs.

- I removed battery and power cord and reinstalled it back. No use.

- I tried to boot from bootable CD or Flash - boot hangs.

Finally, I removed the HDD and fantastic! Bootable CD started to boot!

Then I did the following trick. Opened HDD cover, disconnected the HDD. Booted from Linux LiveCD, and immediately before linux kernel starts I connect HDD back. LiveCD boots and I can see my HDD!

So, I decided that by some way MBR was broken. So I re-setup the GRUB boot loader on HDD in MBR.

Restarted, no use.

I am not the creator  of OneKey recovery, but seems after I pressed this button my laptop always tries to run OKR from HDD and fails to do so and hangs. Is there a way to reset his memory? :-)

I can see only one ugly workaround. Create bootable flash or CD with GRUB pointing to my HDD, boot from flash or CD, connect back HDD, and boot.

I will be happy to read any comment of lenovo support.

Thx.

P.S. I  also suspect that BIOS drive selection does not work because with connected HDD I can select any boot type but it hangs on HDD attempt.

one key recover would't work if any changes made on hdd volumes ( partitions )

reset them with factory size of spaces or ship it back to the support service for resetting the whole hard disk if you have valid warranty.

I bought  the notebook when was visiting USA (I am from Europe) :-)

So it's very unconvinient to send it back.

Also I am 10 years Linux administrator so I prefer to solve it myself.

What you mean by "reset them with factory size of SPACES"? What spaces?

I can write anything to any address  in MBR or HDD, just tell me where and what :-)

Thx.

if you have valid international warranty, you don't need to ship it back to usa.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=LOOK-IWS#sw

factory size of volume spaces are like :

volume   capacity
eisa          16.75 gb
c:             29.29 gb
d:           103.01 gb

or

200 mb partition for boot

420 gb partition for the OS.

30 gb driver back up partition

14 gb recovery OEM partition.

but it depends on which model you have

1. I have 160G  HDD :-)

2. I doubt that simple repartitioning can help. I erased the whole MBR and partition table (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1) and this is the same as brand new zero filled HDD - no use!

Anybody can advise if bios update is available somewhere?

available bios updates are only for ideapad s9e, s10e and s10 but you can still check for support and download pages if there's any bios update. ( select your brand & family )

Hi minimax,

I guess you haven't made any progress, so I'll just throw a WAG at you.  The OneKey button has put the BIOS in some weird state.

Have you tried resetting BIOS in BIOS (defaults)?  It may be necessary to disconnect AC mains and the laptop battery, and the BIOS battery (is there a BIOS battery in these things???) to get it fully reset.

Like I said, just a WAG,

Z.

Did I tell that I am linux admin ? :-)

1-st of all I removed battery, disconnected AC :-)

Loaded BIOS defaults....

The only thing that I did not do is open the case and remove BIOS battery. I do not like to loose warranty so I plan to go for repair in one of official centers.

Will keep you posted.

Thx for care.
