Replace motherboard in Y50-70

Hello

I have emptied a full glass of water into my laptop. I've send it to repair and they concluded that the motherboard is dead, and the price for a new motherboard is more than the price I payed for the laptop from the beginning.

My last option is to replace the motherboard with a used one myself, and so I will.

Now to the question: Can I use an other motherbord than EXACTLY the model in my laptop? I have done a lot of research, and it looks like most Y50-70 motherboards are identical.

My y50-70

Model Name: 20378

S/N: **********

CPU: INTEL CORE I5 4200H 2.80GHZ

GFX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860m

The motherboard in my dead laptop is 5B20F78766.

SHOULD it then be the EXACT same model (5B20F78766) i replace it with?

or

Can I replace it with any y50-70 motherboard (for example with i7 and GTX 960m)?

or

Can I replace with an other motherboard with the same Model Name (20378) but better specs?

I hope you guys can help me out here Smiley Happy

Mod's Edit: Serial number removed from public view to protect owner from its unwanted use.

Re: Replace motherboard in Y50-70

Hi Malike84 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Ideally , replacement mortherboards should follow the exact FRU from the stock to avoid incompatibility and performance issues.

But since you have a spare systemboard that you don't have to purchase, then it would be worth the attempt just like custom assembling a laptop. Use the spare boards machine number to check for the parts in the part look up page checking that it would be using same parts as with your 59440640

First is the fit with the chassis (upper and lower covers) , then important is the ac adapter power specifications.  Next is the LCD cables and port then moving on other parts that maybe of less sensitive to compatibilities.

This would allow you check on the possibility of swapping or would you rather custom build the one with an I7 board instead.

Hope this help answer your query.

Update us how it would work best for you.

Regards

Re: Replace motherboard in Y50-70

Hi Spidey101

Yeah I guessed that the ideal solution would be to replace it with one that is the exact same.

I don't have a spare motherboard, but can buy a used one for around 200 £. The price for "new" (used) is around 200 £ no matter if I choose a board that is exact the same as the one I have or if I choose a board with better specs.

Thats why I ask the question if I can use a mother board which is not intirely the same, but looks the same, and are for the y50-70 aswell. Then I can upgrade my laptop instead of just repairing for the same price Smiley Happy

It should fit in the chassis eather way, cause the y50-70 looks the same. Therefore my question is on whether it would work to use a different motherboard.

Re: Replace motherboard in Y50-70

Hi Nikar15

I'm from Denmark and the price in Denmark is around 600-700 £ for a new motherboard. Because of that I will buy one from ebay. Prices there is around 200-250 £.

Re: Replace motherboard in Y50-70

Hi Malike84 ,

Back building would work theoretically .

Using the part number and checking for a compatible machine number build would allow you to check on stock parts the new board would have originally.

Specifically research on ac adapter specifications , keyboard/ upper cover and LCD if matches.

Re: Replace motherboard in Y50-70

Hi Spidey101

I have found a motherboard which should actually be the exact same sa mine. So this should be no trouble right. But if I read the description there are no info about the GFX? It should be GTX 860m like mine, but no info? But shouldn't the GFX be a part of the motherboard due to the fact that its embedded on the motherboard?

Link to the motherboard i have found: http://www.waresphere.com/store/motherboard-w-i5-4200h-lenovo-y50-70-2gb-5b20f78766-la-b111p.html

Re: Replace motherboard in Y50-70

Hi Malike84 ,

Checking on the board it does shows the graphic chip (marked yellow below) embedded so this should work. As it has same OEM FRU number , similar gfx specification should follow.

As it usually goes when ordering from a reseller , to check on return policy just in case.

Re: Replace motherboard in Y50-70

Hi Malike84,

Can you tell me where did you find the exact motherboard part number from? I took my laptop the lenovo techs and they told me mine was dead too. I'm looking for a cheaper alternative too.

Thanks.
