Replacing HDD with SSD in Z50-70

2018-01-02, 16:10 PM

I purchased a Z50-70 notebook 3 years back, which came with windows8.1. This got finally upgraded to Windows 10 by Microsoft free of charge. Now I want to replace the 1Tb HDD with a 120Gb SSD. I have removed all my personal data from the 1Tb HDD and it only contains the OS and all the installed programmes. The to total disk usage is hardly 55-60Gb.

Can sombody help with the detailed procedure to transfer all the data(OS and Installed Programmes) including all the partitions to my SSD; so that I can discard the HDD altogether.

Hi MKBasak

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It would be advisable to register your free Win10 upgrade digitally synch with your Microsoft account to start with.

Then it can be an option to use cloners provided by your SSD manufacturer or similar software described in the discussions here and here.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Hi Spidey101,

Thanks for the guidance. I have 2 more queries-

1. I already have a Microsoft Account, can you guide me how to digitally synch my Win10 Upgrade?

2. I could locate two Kingston Cloning software (My drive is 120Gb Kingston) one is EaseUS Todo Backup and the other is Acronis True Image. Can you suggest which one will be better to use?

Regards,

MKBasak.

Hi MKBasak,

Greetings.

You can follow this guide for linking the digital key to your MS account.

About choosing cloners, it would depend on several factors like freeware/ paid, certified software compatible to the SSD etc. There are several review/ comparison done online. Personally, since SSD have limited capacity I usually go for a clean installation maximizing undivided partition.

I believe which ever that would work and allow you to boot and perform a successfull factory reset is the best pick.

Regards

Hi Spidey101,

Thanks for your support.

As Acronis was a paid software, I used the EaseUS Freeware. I successfully cloned my HDD to SSD and installed it.

Regards.

Re: Replacing HDD with SSD in Z50-70

I have a lenovo Z50-70 laptop which I purchased some 4 years ago and it has become incredibly slow. I want to upgrade the HDD to a 500 Gb SSD and am planning to use Kingston 480GB A400 SSD 2.5'' SATA 7MM 2.5-Inch SA400S37/480 for the upgrade. Will my laptop be compatible with this SSD for the upgrade? Also I have a licensed Windows 10 on my system and I have read that I need to do a clean install of Windows on my SSD. In that case should I replace the HDD with the SSD and then attempt a clean install or should I create a Recovery Drive on the  SSD using a USB to SATA cable while the HDD is still plugged in? Please advise.

To start with, purchase a external usb3.0 casing. Install the Kingston SSD onto it. Download Ease US Todo Backup (Free Version) on your Laptop. Connect the External Drive and initialize it to GPT disk. Run the backup software, go option "Clone" (not-"System Clone") and create a clone of your HDD on the SSD. use the option - "optimise for SSD". Replace the HDD with SSD. You should be able to boot the system normally. Important note - Ensure your HDD contain no more than 500Gb of data before cloning.

Re: Replacing HDD with SSD in Z50-70

Thanks a lot for the reply. I have replaced my old HDD with a SSD and as expected my laptop reponse has improved greatly judging by the Disk benchmark results before and after SSD upgrade. I directly replaced my old HDD with SSD without even cloning the existing hard drive. Once I swapped the old HDD with the SSD, I tried booting the system and as expected, I got all sorts of errors due to absence of any old drives. Then I used the recovery option by inserting a Windows bootable drive and installed a clean Windows 10. After a couple of restarts my laptop was ready with a marginal improvement in performance.

As for the old HDD, I used the USB3 external hard drive case and plugged in the old HDD. All the old files are accessible as well.

Hi Karan,

I have added an Crucial BX500 256GB 2.5" SSD to my z50-70. I've replaced my DVD drive using a caddy. So i'm using both HDD and SSD.

You can go for any reputed SSD brand with 2.5" form factor. I would surely recommend Crucial as its been performing well and relatively cheap.
