Screen goes blank after a little while

Hello, I have a Ideapad z585. When I turn the laptop on it starts to boot, I see the Windows loading screen but then the screen just goes blank. I've tried going into BIOS but it still goes blank there too. Also when i put in a Windows disc and it starts to load it, after a few seconds it still goes blank. Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?

Re: Screen goes blank after a little while

Hi Krytern,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Please try boooting from safe mode, If your computer is booting up in safe mode. This means that a service or an application in normal mode is starting up with a problem.

Perform a Clean Boot to isolate which one is it and you'll be able to use the system in normal mode again,

Let us know how you get on.

It does the same thing if it is loading a Windows CD to try and install Windows again so I don't see how it can be a service or application.

Re: Screen goes blank after a littlHi Krytern, Did you try booting from safe mood? You may se while

Hi Krytern,

Did you try booting from safe mood?

You may shut down the computer completely, unplug the power cable, remove the battery and let it rest for about 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, put the battery in its place, plug in the power cord and restart the computer to check if the issue persists.

Also, if you are comfortable enough you could re-seat the ram & hdd. Please clickc here for Hardware maintenance manual for hardware assistance.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Shashi

Booting in safe mode won't make a difference. Literally, it does it when loading a Windows installation CD as well. That does NOT load from the hard drive so it has nothing to do with Windows. I've already reseating the hard drive and RAM I should have mentioned that. I have also plugged the laptop into a TV using HDMI and it works fine, I can use the laptop plugged into the TV. But with the laptop's screen, it turns off after a few seconds of boot still.

Hi Krytern,

Sorry to hear that your issue is not been fixed.

Please load windows when connected to tv, complete uninstall the graphics drivers & re-install it. This could resolve this issue.

Below are the latest video drivers.

Win 7

Win 8.1

It isn't the graphics driver since it does the same thing when loading a Windows Installation disc.... The hard drive is NOT used when loading from the disc.....

Re: Screen goes blank after a little while

Hello,

First off, giant caveat:  I'm completely unfamiliar with the Ideapad z585.

That said, have you tried entering the BIOS/UEFI firmware by pressing the F2 key as soon as power is applied?  If so, can the system stay on the BIOS screen for a few minutes without any keypresses, or does the screen go blank as well, even when it is just sitting there on the BIOS screen with no input from you?

Re: Screen goes blank after a little while

I thought I tried to enter BIOS but it seems I didn't because I can't. I tried tapping F2 repeatedly from turning it on but it just goes from the Lenovo logo to the Windows logo, then the screen fades to blank. (The screen doesn't turn off instantly, it fades to blank taking about a second to go from seeing the Windows logo to blank). I've tried all of the F keys and delete to enter BIOS. When I press the little button next to the power button it turns on and i get a little menu and it seems the screen does NOT turn off when I am in this menu! I left it for a few minutes and the screen stayed on. I have the options "Manual Startup", "BIOS Setup", "Boot Menu" and "System Recovery". When I select BIOS Setup it doesn't enter BIOS instead it waits for a few seconds about 5 or 10 seconds and then the Windows logo appears, then screen fades out after a few seconds. If I select System Recovery the Windows logo appears with the text "Preparing Automatic Repair" under it and then the screen fades to black again.

Re: Screen goes blank after a little while

Sorry for the double post but it seems selecting system prepare doesn't make that text appear under the Windows logo it just tries loading windows normally. That text appears sometimes where I keep forcing the laptop off due to this issue.
