USB 3.0 Ports Not Working - Y580

Y580, Win10

 

I just purchased a used Y580 cheap because it has non-functional USB 3.0 ports. The USB 2.0 port works fine.


When I plug in a USB cable, it doesn't register anything, as if there's no power to the ports. Which leads me to believe it's not a driver issue...but I could be wrong about that.

 

My thought was that the controller on the motherboard might be bad, but I don't know much about laptops, honestly. I'm more of a desktop guy when it comes to hardware. I'm not even sure if the USB controller is onboard or a separate board in the laptop.

 

Any ideas on how to fix this, or am I just out of luck?

likely a blown port.
But is it listed in Device manage and what operating systems are you running DETAILS !!! It all depends on a lot and you supplied nothing useful. Run any diagnostics on it?

Check also after the pin contacts in the port hole. Are any bent or broken?

Thanks for the reply, TrippleC.

 

I gave some of the details you asked for in my first message, such as OS and the fact that it's all the USB 3.0 ports, not just one. So I know it's not a blown port. The ports are fine upon visual inspection.

 

The OS is Windows 10. No, I haven't run a diagnostics on them. I don't know how.

 

Yes, the USB drivers show up in the Device Manager and I see nothing out of the ordinary. I looked for drivers, but Lenovo just says that Windows 10 has the drivers already, so I can't replace the drivers. My next step was going to be to remove the drivers and let them reinstall, unless there's a better option, of course. I used to do tech support over the phone, but I never got into really testing on hardware by hand.

In device manage does it say the USB 3.0 ports are working fine?
Look up your system support and find Lenovo diagnostics for your machine. There will likely be at least one package you can download.

Thanks for the post.

 

The device manager shows the USB ports are all working properly.

I downloaded the individual diagnostics tool for Lenovo, but it didn't find any problems. It didn't have a tool for the USB ports. The closest tool I could use for the USB was the motherboard diagnostic scan. It found no problems.

 

In the device manager, I found the bluetooth USB 4.0 drivers were not starting, but that's for the little wireless card I just installed in the computer last night. I fixed that but then the microsoft bluetooth driver wasn't starting, so I'm guessing the laptop has bluetooth drivers of its own that are causing a conflict with the wireless card's bluetooth. Either way, it says USB 4.0 on it, so I figured I'd mention it. I'm not really sure what that means since it's bluetooth and not just a standard USB port. I haven't messed around with bluetooth much.

 

Still not sure what the problem is.

Never heard of USB|4.0, there is a new USB C which also supports Thunderbolt but that is only on very new systems.

Verify you are using the Lenovo drivers and the Lenovo chipset application has been run unless you did a factory recovery install from the NOVO| button to start from scratch. Something may be blown on the board but with all the ports not working with USB 2.0 flash drives or USB 3.0 means something is drastically wrong in the software and a clean OEM install of the OS is the only way to be certain.

It has a fresh install of Windows 10, but I'm not sure if it has the Lenovo drivers. I'll have to download and install them.

 

It's the USB 2.0 port that works, but the three USB 3.0 ports don't work. They're run off a controller on the motherboard, right? If I really need them to work, I'll just buy another motherboard if that's the problem. They're cheap on eBay. But I'm hoping to try everything else first to save myself $120.

Factory image is the ultimate test. But if you haven't installed the Lenovo motherboard files then its a possibility as the controller is on the motherboard on all notebooks.

As it turns out, there really weren't any drivers for the motherboard aside from what comes with Windows 10. But that's okay because I figured out the problem. The controller on the motherboard is bad.

 

I was incorrect when I thought it was only the USB 3.0 ports that weren't working. I took a closer look and realized that it was only the motherboard ports that weren't working, which means one USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports. I still have one USB 3.0 port working, but it's the one that's not part of the motherboard. It's the one that's on a separate board connected to the motherboard. So to fix this, I'll just have to get a new motherboard. Not a big deal, really. They're cheap on eBay. I don't need the USB ports right now, so I'll put it off for a while.
