Unathorized Wireless Network Card - with a Lenovo supplied part!

2016-08-10, 14:42 PM

Hi all,

Lenovo Z70-80.   Frequently dropping wireless internet connection.  Ran the Lenovo diagnostic tool.  Support told me I needed a new wireless card.  Several WEEKS later it arrived...

New card looks a bit different and larger and has more pins but still fit in the slot.

With the new card when I boot the machine I get (before windows or anything else loads):
"Unathorized Wireless network card is plugged in. Power off and remove it"

Get back on the phone with support and was given 2 options - either sending the machine away for who knows how long or reinstalling the operating system which I don't understand how it will work if the machine won't boot to windows! Neither really work for me since the machine is used everyday all day for work.

Any advice on what to do - or who at Lenovo I need to beg for a proper wifi card?

Thanks in advance!

Hi btrabucco ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you have the machine number ? Check on the machine number from the sticker or check it from here ,just keep your serial number confidential.

I tried to get the parts look up page to show compatible models via WLAN card part number.

00JT471  (old) shows compatible with Z70-80 as 00JT480 (new) not showing  as this may be the reason for the notice "unathorized wireless network card error"  .

You may have to call back in technical support using the same case number and have them informed about this information we gathered. I am sure that both you and tech support can arrange on alternative option that would work best for both as depot repair is not preferred.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

I'll give them a call once my blood pressure returns to normal from the last call.

Thank you for the quick reply and very helpful information!

Lenovo is likely still White Listing WLAN cards as they did on the Thinkpads. What this means authorized card (Their FRU) is coded in the BIOS. So the same part # of a card from generic or OEM's own versions with not be authenticated and will therefore not work. You need one of the approved FRU parts to replace it with.

No work around on this either. A retail Intel card will never work with a White List BIOS implementation.
