Recently I have been contemplating upgrading some components of my y510p. First off I've beel looking upgrading the RAM from the 8GB to 16GB and wanted to get some advice for that. Second I wanted to upgrade my 1 TB HDD to a SSD for better start up and performance or upgrade the 24GB SSD to a larger one. Main reason for my wanting to upgrade is because I am a pretty frequent gamer and need a system that can support multitasking well in addition to running CAD programs in the future. Once I figure out what to upgrade I want to get rid of most of the bloatware which I'll address later on here. So in short, what recommendations would you have for components?

I would say that 8GB RAM is more than enough at the moment but if you really want to upgrade, you will need to find a package deal 2*8GB from the same brand and type. I would recommend RipJaws or Corsair or Kingston, apart from the ones mentioned in the compatible parts manual.
If you can figure out which 8GB RAM is already installed in your Y510P then you can also find out and buy the exact same RAM from a vendor. Typically you need to look at the clock and timing of the RAM to make them compatible, if you are going to try to mix brands.
Y510P uses a DD3L 1.35V RAM, but you need to check your specific model.
Coming to replacing the HDD, I would suggest you to buy an SSD to replace your HDD since that would give you the maximium speed benefit. You will, however, need to do extensive research to install the OS on your new SSD, keep your original HDD intact in case the SSD fails (for restore) and create backups including recovery disks.
I would typically go with a Samsing 840 EVO 512 GB, since that HDD is a superb performer.
