Upgrading Lenovo Ideapad Y510P with SSD-card via SSD-connector

I have a “Y510P Leonovo Ideapad” and found out, that the mainboard contains an empty port-connector labeled with “SSD”. A picture of this connector is in the attached image. I am planning to upgrade the Laptop with an SSD-card to improve system speed. Within this context I have a couple of questions, regarding the specifications of this port and suitable SSD-cards:

  1. Does this port both accept SATA as well as PCIe SSD-cards?
  2. Is there a limitation on the maximum memory-size of the installed SSD-card? Can I install a 256GB SSD-card? (For example “Transcend MTS400 256GB SSD”) ?
  3. Can I partition the SSD-card in a way to fully install Windows 10 on it, making it the boot partition. The SSD-card should then be visible as a standard drive C:\ under Windows.
  4. Can I also install a second operating system (Linux) onto a second partition on the SSD-card, making it a dual boot system?

I would be very happy, if anyone could help me with these questions, so that I can upgrade the laptop with the appropriate SSD-card and configuration.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Upgrading Lenovo Ideapad Y510P with SSD-card via SSD-connector

Hi electron8000

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Our community has several discussions about SSD on the m.2 slot SATA done that you can also review here and here to name some.  This goes to a machine which was ordered with the optional SSD at the point of purchase.

On similar SSD upgrade video here for the Y510p, (128GB SSD M.2 NGFF 42mm 6G SSD Solid State Disk- ZTC-SM201-128G) not able to get a sample case with higher GB SSD yet. Similar post here.

Dual booting with Linux was noted in this as discussed also here.

Hope this help answer your query.

You can take your time reviewing suggested links as well as other references regarding upgrades and installation done for this model a step at a time.
