Upgrading Y730 to Intel 5300 Wifi

2009-02-20, 23:32 PM

I'm looking to upgrade my Y730 to a Intel 5300 but keep reading that the 5300 wont work on Lenovos because of  a BIOS problem. Some places I look they say that their specific version with only work with lenovos and then other places say they wont work with lenovos or HPs. Every place I look has the exact same model number. Im so confused. Can anyone provide any help?

Thanks so much in advance!!!!

Here is a link to the one that I am looking at on ebay. Link

The description says it will work with IBM laptops that have GM45 but they only list Thinkpads as compatable model number no idepads at all.

What do ya'll think?

In a Lenovo/IBM laptop, the BIOS has a predefined list of hardware IDs of the WLAN cards it will accept. If the card you put in is not on the list, the BIOS will throw up a flag by stating that an unsupported network card was inserted. It will tell you to remove it and then reboot the computer.

The hardware ID on a Lenovo/IBM branded card is different from that of a generic one. Thus, a generic one will not work. Older ThinkPads had a work-around that enabled any card to work but the method used doesn't apply to IdeaPads.

Lenovo states that this is to ensure that the hardware complies with FCC standards [or equivalent for different countries]. Reference

However, I do believe that any device that transmits radio waves for communication has to be certified by the FCC anyways. So the idea kind of bounces back and hits them in the face. Doesn't it?

Yes. I accomplished this yesterday, using an Intel 5300 with Lenovo part FRU 43Y6495 and the most recent BIOS. Nice finally to be able to use all three antennas.

Note: Intel 4965 FRU 42T0865 does NOT work.
