Y40 - battery drain



My battery completely drains from 100% down to 0% very quickly (less than 30min) even when shutdown.

I get the "weak battery" message pop up and it suggests I need to replace it.


My notebook (Y40) is only ~6 months old therefore still under warranty. 


How do I fix my problem? Not I actually need a new battery or can something else cause this error?

Does my warranty cover battery replacement?

How should I go about replacing my battery if I need to?

Welcome to the Forums  


As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with battery in your Lenovo Y40 laptop.


Try to perform the battery gauge reset, to perform the gauge reset go to energy manager select maintenance and guide and select gauge reset and check for the issue.


Yes the warranty covers the battery but only for 1 year as per the policy.

In response to customer reports of unexpected battery gauge behavior on Y40-70 and Y40-80 laptops, Lenovo determined the battery gauge software is performing as expected. The unusual gauge results being reported are a reflection of the battery reaching end of life.


Lenovo has released a Service TIP to assist customers with obtaining battery replacements under warranty, or if out of warranty, to find a replacement battery from Lenovo-approved vendors. The Service TIP can be found here:


The part numbers for Y40-70/80 batteries are:

To determine which battery came with your Y40 notebook, instructions for removing the bottom cover can be found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual pdf here. An alternative to opening your system (which does not void warranty) is to search for batteries using the model/product number located on the bottom cover.
