Y50-70 HDD died, will buy SSD to replace it but what do I need software wise?

More specifically, what do I need in regards to OS? All the drivers etc can of course be found via the website, but the customer support I spoke to on the phone earlier tried to get me to buy a windows license from their "service shop" but does it really need to be a specific "lenovo version" of windows?

I have access to legit windows licenses so it feels a bit redundant to buy one extra if there's no real reason for it.

Hi MissDeliana ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

What Windows version came with your original system.

Product keys for preloaded OEM machine is embedded on the chip of the board and as long as you installed the same version , it should automatically be activated once reached the internet microsoft database.

You just need to download the WIndows ISO image installer / Media creation tool to isntall and the remaining drivers from the support site and it should be enough just like a clean installation .

You can review this guide for reference. For Windows 10 (specially if you manage to avail of the free upgrade and had it activated ,check on this guide.

Hope this help answer your query.

Regards

Re: Y50-70 HDD died, will buy SSD to replace it but what do I need software wise?

I can't quite remember what it came with, as I later upgraded to WIndows 10, but I think it was Windows 8 of some kind, I can probably find out, I have the original packaging still around (somewhere...) and I'm pretty sure it's specified on the box.

Thank you for your reply, it was very helpful! I'll see if I can find out and if it works and report back on how it went. Smiley Happy

Hi MissDeliana ,

You may privately message me with the serial number to check on the original OS (it would also show on the Microsoft Sticker) if needed or just post the machine number listed from the sticker or check it from here. Just keep the serial number confidential. It would also show

Above highlighted links for Windows 8.1 and Win 10 above .

Update us soon as convenient.

Regards

Re: Y50-70 HDD died, will buy SSD to replace it but what do I need software wise?

I gather you did not have an Image backup. Yep you need to rebuild from scratch.

Original OS likely Win 8.1 and do all the updates!! Likely at least a 1/2 day job min. This gets the newer preperation files on the system the Win 10 wants to see for a trouble free upgrade.

Do the upgrade to Win 10 which should activate automatically once done.

As for an SSD stick to well known drives Samsung or Crucial.

Yeah I have a Samsung SSD all ready to go, so I got that bit covered.  Smiley Happy
There was a backup partition on the original drive but since it's completely dead there's not much I can do with that.
Will sit down and install stuff tonight (I'm in Sweden, so I'm guessing my "tonight" is slightly earlier than yours.)

Backup lesson learned, the hard way. Smiley Wink

All you have to do is to download the media creation tool for win 10 from microsoft's site to create a win 10 installer. Boot from this installer and just ignore/skip if ask for a product key. Be sure to select win 10 Home edition. For needed drivers just download them from Lenovo's site.

I guess that would work as well as it was activated before. Save a ton of time.

Always backup to another drive external is the best. AOMEI Backupper Standard is the ticket as its free and does it All !!! No worries after if some thing happens.
