Y50-70 - No BIOS screen, clicking/popping sound from speakers, won't boot

The last few weeks my Y50-70 always took a bit longer to show the Lenovo BIOS screen after turning it on and during that time ~ twice per second there was a popping sound coming from my external speakers. Also the HDD light was blinking to that sound. But when the laptop showed the BIOS screen after a few seconds everything else was normal and I had no problem in daily use / gaming, ...

Since yesterday my laptop doesn't start anymore at all. I still get the same popping noise from my external speakers or more of a clicking noise from the internal speakers if I unplug my external speakers. First I thought it's an HDD failure, but even without HDD I get the same sounds and no BIOS screen at all and the HDD works without problems in an external case. The screen stays black all the time. The fans are turning normally.

I'm no expert, but for me it seems my mainboard died. Or is it something else? Does anyone know the problem and a solution? Sadly my warranty period is over (2 years, 8 months old laptop). I checked online and saw a website saying they take 379€ for mainboard replacement... is there a cheaper way?

Kind regards, Torben

EDIT: Tried booting the laptop with only 1 RAM module, but it didn't help. I also unplugged my battery and waited for some time before plugging it in again. For some reason the blinking of the HDD LED is a lot slower now, like once every 3 seconds instead of twice per second.

Re: Y50-70 - No BIOS screen, clicking/popping sound from speakers, won't boot

Hello Torben1988

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

That does sound like that there will be an issue with the hardware. As you suggest, likely the motherboard.

Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.

(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)
1. Turn the unit off
2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter
3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds
4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter
5. Turn the unit on as normal

Also, see if you are able to get the unit to boot with the NOVO button at all to get into the recovery menu..

Otherwise, if this fails, then it will likely need a repair if it still refuses to boot up.

If you don`t want to go through Lenovo`s repair, you can always visit a third party repair shop and see if they can at least identify the issue with the unit.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Sounds very much like its quit. Long shot it could be the AC adapter but doesn't sound like it.

Re: Y50-70 - No BIOS screen, clicking/popping sound from speakers, won't boot

I was able to fix it by flashing a new BIOS as explained by Koni5560 here.

Now my only problem is that my HDD seems to be broken from all the turning on/off for hours while trying to start the laptop. I can't log in to my Windows user account anymore. But I will just try to fix Windows somehow. And if the HDD is unrepairable I will get a new one. I couldn't believe my eyes when I finally saw the Lenovo logo on the screen again!

Re: Y50-70 - No BIOS screen, clicking/popping sound from speakers, won't boot

Hi everyone

I have pretty much the same issue. The thing is now it happened during windows 10 update. During configuring it went to restart and now i am stuck with unfinished update and black screen.

I tried all the  usual troubleshooting steps and currently again waiting for cool-down with battery disconnected as wel as hdd this time.

will try start up again soon but i am getting desperate.

If all fails I want to try the flashing BIOS process by Koni, as Torben suggested but my dilemma is what will happen with update in progress?

And if someone has some other advice I would appreciate very much.
