Y50-70, Nvidia GTX 960M - low GPU frequency after every restart

Dear Lenovo Support,

When I install the newest GPU driver (or the one dedicated to my laptop from Lenovo website) my GPU works at its full efficiency in games (i.e. when I play Gloria Victis I have 35-40 FPS, which is acceptable) and the GPU clock works at frequency 1201 MHz. I can play whole day and the temperature stabilizes at 75 - 80 degrees Celsius (picture below):after driver reinstallation - OK.JPGFresh driver installation, no restart.

Unfortunately if I restart my laptop (I have Windows 10 Home 64-bit) and start my game, the GPU frequency drops to 326 MHz and framerate drops to 11 FPS, which is unacceptable (see picture below):after restart - NOT OK.JPGAfter restart - frequency drops and won't rise.

The only way to restore the maximum frequency is to do a clean reinstallation of the driver. Then frequency returns to maximum, but it lasts only until next restart.

Obviously I don't want to reinstall my graphics driver after every restart..

Could you please help?

Hi Kejpi,

It sounds like when you restart your machine it is using the integrated GPU instead of the NVidia card.

You could try disabling the integrated graphics card in the BIOS.

Hello kejpi

Welcome to the Lenovo forum,

What i recommend is installing the driver aswell as the chipset driver from the lenovo support page. Check if its working then do the restart and check again.

Please keep us updated with how you get on so we can help futher. Smiley Happy

Re: Y50-70, Nvidia GTX 960M - low GPU frequency after every restart

Many thanks !! Smiley Happy

Your advice has resolved the issue.

Unfortunately the (older) graphics driver from Lenovo website has been crashing after a few minutes resulting in the below error:Nvidia Control Panel.JPG

I have downloaded the newest driver from NVidia website and it works fine. No crashes, no lowered frequency after restart.

Thank you for your help!

Best regards,

Re: Y50-70, Nvidia GTX 960M - low GPU frequency after every restart

I am sorry to say that, but my happiness lasted for 1 day Smiley Sad

The efficiency and clock frequency were at its maximum after just 1 restart and I could play whole day.

The next day issue reoccured - frequency around 300 MHz instead of 1200, while the temperature barely 51 degrees..

 Any further advices?

Thank you,

Re: Y50-70, Nvidia GTX 960M - low GPU frequency after every restart

I did not have the GTX 960m varient (as I using GTX 860m). But I'll try to help out as it is maybe just driver issue.

- I'm consider you have try setting the Nvidia Control Panel, or using 'run with graphic processer -> High-performance Nvidia processer'. So, I'm gonna skip this. As it is not really a driver related, but clean install will also default every setting in the Nvidia Control Panel (if not clean install, all setting will remain).

- As you are using lastest Nvidia Driver already. You may consider using lastest Intel Driver from Windows update (for Windows 8/8.1/10). If it is still not resolve. I recommended using Display Driver Uninstaller from guru3D website and completely eradicated all Nvidia and Intel Driver then re-install them again and see if the problem is resolve.

As Display Driver Uninstaller is a very clean method of uninstall the Driver. Most of the people having problem with Nvidia driver is very happy with this program. I also using this DDU to clean uninstall all my grahic driver the last time I have graphic problem.

Ps. If above method still not working. Maybe you should enable GPU Activity and see if your game really activated GTX 960m. If not you should tell it to activated (by Nvidia Control Panel ofc). As GPU fre quency may not really telling anything but GPU Activity will tell if it is really working or not. And if it is working, what program is using it. You may want to Screenshot the GPU Frequency along with GPU activity, I think you can tell the difference there.

Re: Y50-70, Nvidia GTX 960M - low GPU frequency after every restart

Homin's solution worked for me. I had to uninstall BOTH integrated Intel graphics driver and NVidia one using DDU. (I've already been using DDU before but only for NVidia and it helped only until next restart). Then I installed Intel graphics driver from Lenovo website and NVidia driver also from Lenovo website. After 1 restart the NVidia driver from Lenovo crashed. So I downloaded the newest driver from NVidia website. Since then I have been playing for a few days (with a few restarts) and the issue has not reoccured - the NVidia card works at it's full efficiency.

Thank you very much Homin for your advice.

Re: Y50-70, Nvidia GTX 960M - low GPU frequency after every restart

Oww, sorry to here that D:. I was happy when you said it was fixed too.

I think you should try to see if the card is working properly first. Just open Nvidia GPU activity tray icon when you in the game and see if there are game's exe on the list. Since the Nvidia is not suppose to work when the game is not running. If the GPU show activity but the GPU frequency still low, I think there are some outer influence here. Because the GPU suppose to work at high frequency when the GPU show activity.

The only thing I can think of right now is 'Fast start-up'. Well, it has very high impact on me because some game doesn't sit well with fast start-up , like, the FPS is dropped by half even though the other game works fine. But the problem will solve if I restart laptop after that. If you have it on, try set it to off. Also, before you try this just remember that 'Fast Start-up' will not work when restart the Laptop. So, it only has issue when you shut down normally. If your problem occur when you shut down normally, it is highly because Fast start-up. FYI, restart the laptop will, however, fixed the problem. Because as I said, Fast start-up is ignore when restart.

Hope this time it will fixed the problem for good.

Re: Y50-70, Nvidia GTX 960M - low GPU frequency after every restart

Homin,

Just like you said: after I have restarted Windows the issue had been fixed Smiley Happy

I decided to turn of Fast Start-up and after shutting the pc down and starting it again the issue has not reappeared and the graphics works at its full efficiency Smiley Happy

I hope this time I won't have to un-mark your past as a Solution Smiley Happy

Thank you very much for your help!
