My Y50 recently went to black screen and does so upon starting and showing the 'Lenovo' name. So before the login screen.
Any other suggestions that i should try?

Welcome to the Community Forums.
You can still try to force shutdown 2-3 times for the advance boot option to enter safe mode as indicated here.
Otherwise you may take the option to back up your files first by manually removing your drive and placing it on another machine or external enclosure if needed.
Then you can safely proceed with repair install or custom install if reset and other advance option stilll fails.
Update us how it goes best for you.

Thanks. I have entered the troubleshooting via the forced shutdown method but still unable to enter safe mode.
I did run a 'reset pc' and it went through the process but then during the windows install this error message came up:
"Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware"
does this help you at all?

Further update; when the reset failed the system went through a 'undoing changes' process. After that and for the first time in days it reached the login page. However, it will not accept my Windows's password and when I choose "I forgot my password' it shows the error " Windows couldn't connect to the ProfSvc service"

Back up your files as I suspect corrupted system files that may lead to repair /upgrade install if not resetting to factory image via novo key as last option.
