Y50 GPU high temperature reaching 90°c

2016-02-23, 17:31 PM

If I play NFS most wanted for example, my GPU reaches around 90°c after about 15-20 minutes! !

Ambient temperature is around 20-25°c

Is this normal?

Note: With the cooling pad it reaches ~ 86°c

Yes this a problem I've exposed here and the solution I choose : https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/How-I-ve-kept-my-laptop-from-burning-to-death-Y50/td-p/2276110

You can re-paste the GPU but it is a highly technical task. It would give you the best results IF done correctly.

Meanwhile, some of the more common steps to reduce temps -

1) Reduce the graphical settings , especially the ones which drive the GPU crazy like Ambient occlusion, TresFX, Tessellation, Multi-sample Filtering.

2) Place the laptop / cooling pad elevated from surface. Do not play where the exhaust vents are blocked.

3) Clean the exhaust vents of any dirt/dust to ensure proper air circulation. You can also open the cover and clean the fans inside using a can of compressed air.

Just to be clear, GPUs are capable of running at that temp in a laptop. Ideally, I like my GPU to stay less than 80, but it is not always possible.

PS - I checked over on other forums and people have not posted a concrete solution for reducing heat.

Y510p has a lots of mods available, hopefully someone will come up for Y50 too.

My laptop is still covered under warranty. . I think I'll make them do it.
But how long should it last?

I have never seen a case where lenovo repastes GPUs. (since there is no damage)

If your GPU is fried, they will put in a new motherboard, but thats about it.

Even if you convince someone (somehow) to put a new thermal paste, they can use any generic paste which can worsen the actual cooling.

Tha guy in above post who is suggesting, used a much superior thermal paste than any I have seen in Company manufactured laptops (and I am talking about all manufacturers). Also, the application of thermal paste matters (not just the type).
