Hey guys, ive had my lenovo y50 since August and have backed it up frequently and consistently on Lacie 2tb drive since I got it. However, my last backup was in March. This is because the last few times I have tried to back up, it gets to around 80-90% done, and then my entire computer freezes to the point where the cursor stops moving and I have to do a hard reboot. When it freezes, the hard drive light turns off, so i don't think it's still writing anything to my external drive when that happens. This has happened with system image backup, one key recovery, and multiple third party applications. Has anyone had anything similar happen to them? Does anyone know what to do?
I'm running Windows 8.1, with a 2.6ghz processor and 16gb of ram.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Divinitymachine ,
I would be an advantage to check on the integrity of the harddrive initially before checking out other points of failure.
You can run Lenovo Solutions Center to further evaluate if a hardware issue is the reason.
To check on the WIndows system file , search for CMD and run as admistrator.
type sfc scannow /r . As this would not only check health of the file and fix it as it comes.
Best to manually back up your important data just in case.

Hey Spidey101, thank you for the response!
Until today I actually didn't know about Lenovo Solutions Center, and I wish I had sooner haha. I did a hardware scan, and it was just as I had feared. Everything turned up perfect except my hard drive. While SMART status test and Funnel seek test both passed, Targeted Read Test, Random Seek Test, SMART Short Self Test and SMART Drive Self Test all had Xs or exclamation points. Looks like I'm probably going to be contacting Lenovo Support directly later today...
Also, I have made a habit out of copying and pasting my users folder directly to my hard drive since this behaviour started happening. Just to be sure that if my laptop crashes for real, I'll be safe. Thank you very much for you help!

Hi Divinitymachine ,
Doing these periodic back up is a very good habit , unfortunately SMART errors do need to be attended to as it is a precursor of a harddrive crash very soon to occur.
