Y500 Event ID 37 Task Category 7

I have the Lenovo Y500 with the new GT 750M. I currently have Windows 7 x64 on the laptop. Whenever I play a decently intense video game, these kernel processor power events will appear : The speed of processor # in group # is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report. There are 8 in total, one for every core. I have the i7 3630qm btw. The strange part is that if Im simply browsing the web or something, these errors never occur. It's not a major problem, since performance doesn't seem to be affected much if at all, but its bugging the hell out of me. The max temp for the cpu while playing is 85 celsius and 74 celsius for the GT 750M.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Y500 Event ID 37 Task Category 7

The BIOS automatically disables Turbo Boost when the CPU temperature reaches 85 degrees Celsius to protect itself from overheating. At the beginning, your CPU is running at Turbo clocks, but once it reaches 85 degrees, your GHz will drop to 2.4 GHz which is it's base/normal frequency.

To see this for yourself, download realtemp and follow the picture below:

The log file is stored on the same folder as Real Temp. You can look at it and see if the GHz drops from 3 GHz to 2.4 GHz occasionally.

Re: Y500 Event ID 37 Task Category 7

So I recorded the temp like you have shown. Turbo boost is indeed working, but all of a sudden it becomes disabled when the temperatures are only in the high 60s. Then sure enough, about a minute later an entry appears in Event Viewer. The max temperatures for this session are 74 78 77 74 (taken from Real Temp)

Re: Y500 Event ID 37 Task Category 7

Are you playing on high performance plan? Go to the Energy Management Software and change the power plan to the highest performance plan. Try to observe if the CPU still disables Turbo while gaming. BTW, do you experience huge FPS drops when this happens?

Re: Y500 Event ID 37 Task Category 7

I was playing on the balanced plan before. I just changed it to high performance but the same thing occurs. I dont experience any huge FPS hits while gaming. It's weird but once turbo boost reaches its max clock, it only lasts about a minute before dropping to 2.4 ghz.

Re: Y500 Event ID 37 Task Category 7

Intel turbo boost disables itself when it finds that the application can run adequately on base frequency. Can you try to convert a large video file like an unprotected DVD to a mp4 file using handbrake video encoder and see if the turbo boost is active for the whole conversion time? For my CPU, turbo boost never turns itself off only when doing CPU intensive task. When gaming, turbo boost turns on and off too but only when it reaches 85 - 90 degrees. Like yours I don't get any FPS drops when this happens while gaming.

Re: Y500 Event ID 37 Task Category 7

You're right. I just converted a DVD to MP4 using Handbrake and turbo boost lasted a good 6 minutes before shutting off due to temp (high 80s). Then it turned back on for two minutes before stopping completely. The load during conversion was around 80%. During gaming the load is only about 25%, which is why turbo boost probably disables itself; the load isn't that great. I'm curious tho. You said that it also turns on and off during gaming for you. Does that mean you get those warnings as well in Event Viewer?

Yes. Just played a game and got this on event viewer:

I didn't get any huge FPS drops though. Like always, I only get FPS dips when there's a lot of graphic activities on the screen.

Re: Y500 Event ID 37 Task Category 7

Okay, so turbo boost is supposed to be like that then. It works when it's need and is disabled when it's not. Thanks for all your help. This has been a good learning experience for me. Smiley Happy I'm just happy to know that my laptop isn't defective and is working as intended.
