Y500 - Replace 16GB SSD

I purchased a Y500 with 650m sli.  Equipped with Windows 8.  16GB cache drive + 1 TB HD.  I removed the 16GB and replaced it with a SanDisk 120GB SSD I had in my old laptop.  I reformatted the 120GB SSD to ensure it was clean.  I had thought the computer would be able to boot from the HDD but not so much.  I get a boot error and cannot boot from either device listed.  I planned to downgrade from Windows 8 to 7.  I'm currently making a Windows 7 USB bootable flash drive.  My questions are:

 

1.  Will this work?  Using the USB flash drive to install Windows 7 on the 120GB SSD?

 

2.  Is Windows 8 still on the HDD?  Should I wipe that drive so that it won't interfere with Windows 7 on the SSD?

 

3.  Do I need to make a backup of Windows 8?  This was a scratch & dent purchase, so I didn't receive the recovery disks that normally come with a computer. 

 

My goal is to have Win 7 on the SSD, and use the 1 TB HDD for storage.

Welcome to Lenovo Community,

 

If you Want to Load Windows 7

A Bootable Windows 7 USB DISK will do fine.

    Given that you have a valid product key for Windows 7 so you won't get the Microsoft Ganuine key validation problem,

 

To enable USB Boot

 Just right after you turn on the computer Start hitting F2, and this should bring you to the BIOS UEFI Menu.

go to the Exit tab and select OS Optimize/OS Optimization and select Other OS.

 

Now go to the Boot TAB or Start Up tab and make sure

Boot mode is on Legacy and if you have Boot Priority Change the value to Legacy First

 

Now Hit F10 to save your changes and Exit

 

Turn OFF your computer and Turn it back on then quickly start hitting F12

This should Give you option to select USB Drive to boot from.

If it did not boot try your USB WIN7 in another computer make sure it is Made Bootable.

I was able to load Win 7 onto the Sandisk SSD using the USB method.  However, now I cannot see the 1TB HDD.  Ideas?

hi

hmm.

 

Can you Try booting to your USB Installer again (Don't Worry we're not gonna reinstall it)

I believe the first page of the Installation of that USB is a Microsoft Licsense Agreement

 

The following Steps will have to Wipe Clean the HDD (data loss)

 

    On that Page Press Shift + F10 to Access Commanad Prompt

    Then Type diskpart then hit enter

    Now type list disk then hit enter

    Check if your HDD is being shown opn the list It should be 900 plus somewhere GB in size, take note of its DISK number

    now type select disk (disk number)  Ex.  select disk 1 then hit enter

    now type clean then hit enter

    after that type exit

    Restart the system and boot to your windows 7

 

   right click on my computer

   Choose Manage

   Select Disk Management,

   you should be able to see your HDD now and do a right click to create partition.

Ok, well did I learn something today!  mSATA!!!  I assumed (very wrongly) that the 2.5 SSD I had (Sandisk 120mg) would simply swap in for the 16GB cache drive.  Then I realized....I had take the 1TB drive out (thinking it was the SSD).  So I learned something quite new today, about the world of mini SSD.  Yikes!!  Thanks for the help though.
