I have a 6 year old Y500 (works great actually) with Ubuntu 18.04 and latest graphical card drivers installed.
The problem is - sometimes after I put the laptop in the "sleep" mode screen will not work again. The worst thing appears randomly (!) when I turn off the laptop - when I turn it on again, there is a high chance that on the next start screen will not work (no Lenovo loading screen, no BIOS). I see funs, keyboard and mouse working, but the screen is not. I connected it once to my projector and it shows BIOS, boot etc. normally, but the screen stays black. In the device menu, I also don't see my display.
After some reboots display randomly starts working again until the next power off.
I can't debug or find any logs about what works wrong because it looks like my laptop can't detect the display even before BIOS starts working.
Any ideas what can be broken? I thought it can be an "LCD Screen Cable", but I found out that there is no connection between the position of the screen and if it will be working or not.

Welcome to the community forums.
Try updating the display driver and the BIOS. You may download the updated display driver and BIOS here: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/. Once done, turn off the fast start up and observe the screen. Follow the steps on this link: https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/ht501793.
Update us how it goes.
