Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

Hello,

I'm new to Lenovo and I'm about to buy one of the Y510P (59373392) with single graphics and the 1TB version.

The last question I've got is whether it is possible to install an additional SSD via the DVD slot-in. I don't need the DVD drive, so it would be wonderful to install a 128GB or 256GB SSD.

I've read some topics and saw that the motherboard doesn't have a mSATA connection but it must have a NGFF connection if I'm right. Since I'm not very experienced with laptops, here are a few more questions

1) If it is possible to install an additional SSD, what products are available?

2) Where do I get the UltraBay adapter?

3) Would it then be possible to make the SSD the bootable drive?

Thanks in advance! Smiley Happy

Re: Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

hi thewavelength,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

You can use a caddy for this.

http://hddcaddy.com/en/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/432-lenovo-ideapad-y510p-hdd-caddy.html

But the SSD you can use here is a 2.5 SSD not the msata one.

  this kind :

       http://www.crucial.com/store/ssd.aspx

ODD can be set as primary boot and should be able to boot windows from it.

BIOS has to be set to legacy.

Hope this helps,

Cheers!

Re: Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

Wow, thanks. Am I right by saying that every normal SATA SSD would work with the caddy you posted?

Would it bring more speed to switch the internal HDD with the SSD?

So, the SSD would be integrated into the Ultrabook and then use the HDD with the caddy? (Is this even possible?)

Thanks in advance!

Re: Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

hi

Yes, as long as it match the connection SATA.

It is going to be much more faster if the SSD is the one inside as the SSD will not rely on the speed the caddy transfer speed. as it will directly connect to the board.

Yep Remove the HDD inside the unit and put the SSD then connect the HDD with the Caddy.

Here is aguide in part removal / replacements

Hope this helps,

Cheers!

Re: Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

hi valentinlamba,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Yes if the system was purchased without an SSD,

The option of a 2.5 SSD should work just fine.

Regards

Solid Cruver

Re: Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

My new Y510P should be shipped to me this week.  I am planning an SSD upgrade and have the following question.

If the SSD is UltraBay mounted what is the performance I can expect in terms of 'what is the maximum transfer rate'. Also what is the configuration of the UltraBay bus, might it be SATA 3 or SATA2.

Thanks in advance,

Herb

Re: Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

Quick question.  If I remove my installed HDD and replace it internally with a SSD, will this void my warranty?  I have just the basic one year warranty plan.  Thanks.

Re: Y510P 59373392: SSD upgrade via UltraBay?

hi

It will never void the warranty unless if a damage happened in the process,

Let's say you already replaced it, then one day the speakers shows some issues, It will still be covered under standard warranty.

You can check this article.

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Will-changing-your-keyboard-void-the-warran...

Hope this helps
