[Y510P] Battery Not Charging

Okay here are the details:

  • Windows 10 Home
  • Ideapad Y510P, only a few years old
  • works perfectly fine
  • battery at 0%, plugged-in not charging
  • original battery and power cords

I can't remember how to get this message to pop up again, but I remember it saying something along the lines of 'Lenovo does not support batteries they didn't make so we are going to pretend you don't have one in'. I have the same battery and charger that came with the computer. I've tried messing with the settings and taking the battery out and putting it back in. I've been to the BIOs screen and looked around. I've searched through forms and everything. I'm about to just buy a new battery for it and see if that fixes it. But I'd like to know what happened so I can prevent it from happening again. Did the battery just get too old and decide to die on me? It's been very frustrating.
