Y510P - Random flickering on screen (horizontal lines)

I have a Y510P IdeaPad. Recently I've been getting random but rather frequent flickering on the screen (horizontal lines moving up, static-like, not extremely severe but very annoying).

  • The flickering lines almost always appear either if I leave laptop running for long time, or shortly after I launch a graphic-intensive program like a game. It might or might not have to do with heat buildup instead of GPU, no idea
  • If I random move the laptop around, or gently press on the edges of the screen, the flickering lines MAY weaken, but after a while comes back again
  • Screenshots taken do not show flickering lines

Already tried:

  • Restart laptop
  • No errors in device manager
  • GPU driver at latest, both the Intel HD and the Nvidia Optimus
  • Reset 3D settings to default in Nvidia Control Panel
  • Checking monitor refresh rate (60Hz, can't be changed)

Anyone know how to fix this problem?

Edit: battery never attached, always plugged directly to power source.

Mod's Edit: System model added to the front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.

Re: Random flickering on screen (horizontal lines)

Hello Crane1

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

It may be possible that the unit is having some issues with the cable connection on the display.

Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.

(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)
1. Turn the unit off
2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter
3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds
4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter
5. Turn the unit on as normal

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Random flickering on screen (horizontal lines)

Hello,

Forgot to mention, my battery is never attached as it's not working correctly (never charges above ~10%), so laptop is always connected directly to power source.

Re: Random flickering on screen (horizontal lines)

Just tried what you wrote but didn't help:

  • Turn off laptop
  • Unplug all cords, battery not attached
  • Hold power key for 30+ seconds
  • Turn laptop back on

Re: Random flickering on screen (horizontal lines)

Sorry for the late reply.

In this instance, if not already, try to enter the BIOS and see if the issue is still present there.

If issue does not persists, then it would mean a sofware issue, in which case, do a factory reset, this would rule out the if indeed a software issue,

If the issue persists, then it would indicate a hardware issue, likely with the cable between stand and display, in which case,  If these steps do not work I would recommend, that you call your local Lenovo support line for a possible service. Below is the link to the phone list where you can find these numbers

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Looking to replace the ribbon cable for Y510P

Hi,

I'm planning to replace the ribbon cable for the monitor on my IdeaPad Y510P, because my screen experiences constant flickering horizontal bars which get a bit better if I squeeze the bezel. I was wondering if there's some kind of part ID/number for this ribbon cable so I can buy it online? And also can I easily replace this myself? Not too hardware-savvy, I did manage to remove the bezel and reconnect the ribbon cable following youtube earlier, so if that's all it involves then should be no problem. If it involves diassembling the entire backside then I'll probably run into issues.

Thanks.

Re: Looking to replace the ribbon cable for Y510P

Unfortunately to replace the video cable will require disassembly of the lower case.  I'm not an owner of your model, but from what I can see in the Y510P's Hardware Maintenance Manual you will have to remove the motherboard as the video cable is routed underneath it.  If you are not comfortable working inside your laptop then see if a friend or relative who is more experienced can assist you.

Here is a link to that manual for your reference....

As for a replacement cable, for older machines like yours eBay and Amazon are a good source for parts.  Here is what I found on eBay for replacements......

Amazon....
