Y510P parts interchange

Y510P Laptop (ideapad) - Type 6494
Serial Number: *********
Machine Type Model: 649459375345
System Model: 20217
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home 10.0.17134 Build 17134

Hi,

I am currently looking into possibilities of upgrading - reviving, if you will - my laptop. I have a couple of questions regarding some things I found:

1. As far as I know, the storage on my laptop consists of a 1TB HDD (mSATA slot) + 24GB SSD (m.2 2242 slot) . I am considering changing both of them. I would like to change the HDD for a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2,5" SSD for storage, and change the 24GB SSD for the Toshiba RC100 240GB/480GB m.2 SSD. Is this possible?

2. If this is possible, my plan was to install the OS on the Toshiba disk - the m.2 SSD. Will this work?

3. Regarding my OS, I never got it on disk; it was preinstalled. Can I somehow recover my copy of Windows, after changing the drives?

Thank you in advance,

Yours sincerely,

Thomas

Re: Y510P parts interchange

Hi tvnijnanten!

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Ans: Yes, that is possible. Just make sure the Toshiba RC100 is on M.2 2242 as well.

2. If this is possible, my plan was to install the OS on the Toshiba disk - the m.2 SSD. Will this work?

This is possible but you need some software to do it. There are some users who were unable to do it. You can check the forums thread here, https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Can-t-install-windows-8-on-M-2-SATA-SSD-Ideapad...

3. Regarding my OS, I never got it on disk; it was preinstalled. Can I somehow recover my copy of Windows, after changing the drives?

The license is embedded on to the motherboard. Create your install media using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. In addition, find and save all the needed drivers for your hardware.
