Y510p SATA-III SSD support

Greetings,

I can't seem to find this information anywhere on the forums, only in question format where fellow forum members asked this question without answer. I decided to try my luck and open a brand new topic instead of flooding someone elses' topic with this.

I love this notebook with its specs and performance and even the heat is manageable but I can't seem to like the bundled HDD... It's giving me nuts. I have a Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD with SATA-III (6gbps) connector. Is the y510p able to handle 6gbps if I replace the internal hdd with my 1tb ssd? Please note, I don't intend to use a caddy and drop my second video card, no way. I want to completely remove this nonsense HDD and insert my SSD in its place. Will it work at its full speed?

Thanks for the info!

Re: Y510p SATA-III SSD support

Hi Wrath87,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Yes I tried searching the forums and couldnt find it either,

Try Running HWinfo, this will scan your hardware.

Try navigating to this pane and see if it will Say Gen 3 6gbps

Regards

Re: Y510p SATA-III SSD support

I have an 850 Pro in mine. Works great, especially with Samsung RAPID Mode (use Samsung Magician software to enable it, it's RAM caching). Of course you won't ever get 6gbps even with a PCIe drive, but you get 500mbps (as advertised) and with RAPID you get about 4gbps. So basically yes you can replace it and it'll work, the connector is SATA III Smiley Wink.

Y510p: i7 4700MQ (Overclocked to 3.6GHz), SLI GT 755M (Each Overclocked 111MHz), Corsair Vengeance 16GB 2133MHz, Samsung 850 Pro 256GB, MyDigitalSSD SuperBoot 128GB, Intel Wireless-AC 7260, Windows 10 Home
Dell XPS 13 (2015): i5 5200U, Intel HD 5500, 4GB 1600MHz, 128GB Samsung M.2 SSD, 802.11ac WLAN, Windows 10 Home (School Laptop)

Re: Y510p SATA-III SSD support

Thanks guys that HWINFO saved the day. Sorry for the long silence but I've chosen a bad day to upgrade just before W10 release so I had to do it twice Smiley Happy. SSD works like a charm getting the stock speeds as described by the samsung specs. The only intriguing part remains will be the ram speeds. My Kingston rams are running on 1600MHz instead of 1866MHz and I can't seem to enable XMP in the stock BIOS but I don't really want to get a third party BIOS either. Seems like I'll have to live with it.

Re: Y510p SATA-III SSD support

Hallo guys ,
I saw this topic and would like to add some questions . I just bought a Lenovo y510p , with only a geforce 755m (i know could add a second card to put in sli with ultrabay, but seem impossible to find one actually , is it true ?)
Anyway i wanted to ask if it's possible to buy a ultrabay with sata3 bay for a new ssd , my problem seem it exist only a compatible bay only with sata 2 connection.. am i right ? If someone thinks i'm wrong could tell the model and where is possible to buy it ?
Same thing for the internal slot m2 , if i would buy am2 ssd , would support sata 3 or only sata 2 ?
Thank you very much if someone could clarify me or give me the links for buying sata3 ultrabay .
