Y510p not recognizing M.2 ssd upgrade

2014-05-13, 23:51 PM

I just bought a 128GB M.2 ssd (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EZ2E8NO/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3ISMVC1FTQD6C) that I was trying to use to upgrade the 24GB caching ssd in a new Y510p using this tutorial: http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/PDFs/Tutorial-Replace-Lenovo-Y510P-Cache-Drive-with-MyDigitalSSD-Super-Cache-2-SSD.pdf

Unfortunately, when I swap the ssd's out, the computer won't even start the bios.  I press the power button, it lights up for a split second and goes out - no fans, no boot.  It boots fine if I put the old M.2 ssd back in.  Do I have to configure something in the bios, or is it most likely the new drive is defective?

If your windows is on your HDD, the system should boot up.

Can you try starting the system without any SSD in it and just the HDD.

Try this: Put back the old ssd and boot to bios. Disable secure boot. Save and exit. Uninstall ExpressCache. Reboot. Go to device manager and uninstall the ssd. Shut down and try swapping the ssds. Boot to bios, and select Reset to setup mode then select  restore Factory keys. Save and exit. See if the new ssd is now recognized.

No luck.  I disabled secure boot under UEFI, uninstalled ExpressCache and the SSD, and replaced it with the new one.  When I tried to power it on, it wouldn't even go to BIOS.

If you look at the tutorial we have done several steps and the next step is to install the super hybrid cache program. See snapshot with checkmark. Uninstall IRST also. If you go to disk management can you see the new ssd unallocated like in the second picture below?

Hey, the only reason I am saying that you try to boot without any SSD is because your 24gb SSD might have critical boot files, that's why u are unable to even start the system.

Have you tried pushing the novo button after installing new SSD?

Also, try to boot without any ssd, that will give you a clear picture if the SSD is at fault or u have a booting problem.

Re: Y510p not recognizing M.2 ssd upgrade

Hello,

First i want to apologize for my bad English :p

i have problem with my Y510P notebook.  I bought it with only 1TB SSHD, this notebook has got M2 SSD slot  so i wanted to expand disk space. I have 128GB NGFF and 256GB NGFF, ultimately has to be 256GB. If i connect 128GB it's working fine i can do whatever i want with it like for e.g format or new partition. When i connect 256GB BIOS see it, and it's looking like all working fine. But... when i want to do whatever from windows like partition, initialization etc. pops Virtual Drive's error "The system cannot find the file specified" (i dont know i good translate it, because i have Polish version) and after this NGFF disapear... I can't see it in HDD management, in bios... Remove SSD from slot and put it again repair this notebook can detect it again. I tried to initializate this SSD first and next make new partition in serval ways like:

- Storage -> Hard Drive Managemenet

- Using EaseUS Partition Master

- from CMD

- Try to instal new OS (Win 8) on it

Every attempt ends like all... with error.

I refund this NGFF Disk because i thought it was bad, but today i get new one and problem it's same. 128GB working fine, 256GB dont working.

Any sugesstions ?

Re: Y510p not recognizing M.2 ssd upgrade

Hej

I have almost the same problem. I'm sad. Yesterday i bought an Adata premier pro sp900 256gb m.2 ssd (2242). I changed it. The old was an liteonit 24gb. The first win8.1 starting was interesting, but from the second starting there was not problem.

So, the bios sees the new adata ssd (disk 1 adata..., disk 2 st1000...), but i reinstalled the Intel rapid storage tech. software, but it does not recognize the ssd (win also, just the bios). After the first win starting (after ssd changing)i saw the new ssd in the device manager, after second not. i tried the latest rapid driver from the intels page and from lenovos page. Nothing happen.

I would use the 256gb ssd for win8.1 partition/games and the 1tb hdd for storage (hibrid with adata ssd catch).

I have thirteen days for refund. Sorry because of my English..

system is: y510p i7 16gb 755msli win8.1 1tb hdd

ok, i figured this out

first you need to revert the bios to an earlier state

follow this "how to white list bios" so that you get the right results

https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/3546-lenovo-y410p-y510p-unlocked-bios-wlan-whitelist-mod-vbios-mod/

modding the bios will allow you to have full access to all of the bios settings

once you have done that, you will need to go into the bios, find the hdd settings, change the hot drive frrom enabled to diabled and hard drive to ssd, before leaving the bios, make sure to set legacy enabled, and legacy first in the boot settings, the f10 to save

mine recognizes that its there now and I added   the old F drive folders inthere too, also the games folder :)
