Re: Lenovo Y570: Game runs smoothly on battery; Choppy on AC Adapter

2011-08-14, 1:32 AM

Correction: I am not sure if it was because i changed some of the settings for Energy Star/Super Energy saver (or watever its called), or if it was because of the changes I made in the Smart Power Saving tab. I think it was working on defaults for energy star, but im not sure.. a lot of people with the Y570 are having this problem*

Y470 graphics problems

2011-08-14, 3:29 AM

Hi, I'm currently having problems with having smooth performance in games with my Y470. I recently installed Starcraft 2 and CoD Black Ops and although the former seemed to play well for a little bit on medium, it gradually slowed down and had occassional bursts of smoothness (even during battle). In the latter, the problem was similar: one moment i can aim and fire perfectly, next moment I can't even move because the screen freezes from stuttering. How do I fix this "stutter" issue? It says that these two games are being used with the GPU... Am I overestimating the power of the 550m? I was expecting to atleast play sc2 on medium smoothly, but now I'm stuck at lowest settings, and even then it still occassionaly stutters... Please help? (I've tried the very newest beta driver on nvidia site).

I have the same problem on my Y570!!! Except the only game i've tested is GTA IV, but a ton of people are getting this problem.

So far, i believe it is not optimus causing the problem because i am on a stable 275.33 nvidia driver, I have set my GPU as preferred, and still i have the stuttering. I believe it is something to do with the energy management and the GPU or even the AC adapter. I get smooth FPS when running on my battery (try that and see if it does anything, if so then it has something to do with power management to the GPU and/or the ac adapter), but it is choppy when i use the ac adapter.

I really have no clue what to do with my power management settings. I even looked at that thread with the Y570 stuttering issue (which was apparently fixed by unchecking somethings in the power management) and it didn't work - it worked for 10 minutes on one of the configurations but resumed stuttering. I may have to set everything to default and try again.

I tried this, but it didn't work. It worked for a while but then resumed the stuttering. If i may ask, what were the full power management settings used

Do you think if i uninstalled the power manager and used the windows 7 power management, it would work better and the stuttering would end? The windows 7 power manager doesn't have as many options so i might have less of an effect on the games. + I think it might be a problem with the lenovo power manager.

If i ever wanted it back, can I still reinstall it? Please reply with advice.. This is one of the only troubleshooting scenarios I can't solve and i'm on the verge of frustration.. =[

Hmm I can't really tell if the problem is fixed, which problem means it isn't. For example, in SC2, scrolling the screen by using the mouse leads to rigid movement of the screen towards that direction. also, it still randomly lags. Even keyboard scrolling lags... Hope Lenovo/nvidia can figure this out; I'm running out of ideas.

If I remember my earlier posts to this convo, I thought my y570's problem was the power management and the power enegery savement options.  Like others, it doesnt work.  It seemed smooth for a bit, Battlefield runs fine now, but GTA IV, and the newly bought and legitly purchased Crysis 2 is having issues.  My GTA IV Issues were temporarily fixed, thanks to Kirllin for that euphoria (no sarcasm).  Hopefully this issue can be resolved.

I recently bought dead rising 2 and tested it out, it seems to have the same problem as GTA IV.  Keeps getting choppy.  However, when unplugged, the lag dissapears.
Also, something to note, has anyone's y570 turned off completely while playing games that have these problems?  Because when I decided I would play these games unplugged, sometimes my computer would crash.  And this happened with Dead Rising 2.  It would just turn off.
