Y580 HDD and SSD

Hello,

I have Lenovo Y580, and I'm thinking of replacing the HDD and adding an SSD.

Therefore, I have two questions.

I checked, and my current HDD is Sata II. Does it mean I can replace it only with another Sata II, or is it also compatible with Sata III as well?

Regarding the SSD, can someone tell me the specs of the drive that the pc can use? I don't know much about SSDs, so the more info the better.

Thank you.

Re: Y580 HDD and SSD

You will not get the benefit of having a SATA III installed since the actual speed for your unit is SATA II. If you have Win 8 as the OS you need not worry about the ssd. You can treat it just like an ordinary hdd except that it has a lesser capacity. Win 8 or above will take care about the configuration. For Win 7 you need some tweaking to make the ssd more efficient.

Re: Y580 HDD and SSD

Thank you for the answer.

But even if I don't benefit from installing Sata III, will Y580 be compatible with it, or do I have to use Sata II?

Re: Y580 HDD and SSD

IMO, the SATA III drive should work but at a SATA II speed.
