Y580 gaming FPS drops

Hey everyone,

So I've been having a problem with my Y580 dropping framerate during gaming (Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2). The game would run fine at a nice 60 fps, then suddenly drop to 30 fps for a second or two, then go right back to 60 fps. This is getting really annoying, and happens very frequently.

FYI, I'm on Windows 7 x64, and using Nvidia driver 310.70

Here is a video demonstrating the problem: http://youtu.be/pyuvk9w4jMg

Re: Y580 gaming FPS drops

It's not related to gaming, but I found that heavy HDD usage slows down the system, in fact sometimes at boot when skype starts and makes it's startup sound, the sound freezes (aka repeats several times) for a second. In older days it would happened when sound card was sharing same IRQ with other systems, such as IDE controller or video card...

Make sure the Lenovo Power Management is set to Dynamic Graphix(MAX)

Re: Y580 gaming FPS drops

I'm 100% sure this is caused by vsync.  Vysnc prevents screen tearing, but it has the side effect of only being able to run a game at 60fps or 30fps.  If performance drops under 60fps even slightly, the frame rape drops to 30fps. Try disabling it in the ingame settings.

If you like vsync because it prevents screen tearing, enable it in the nvidia control panel  (manage 3d settings -> program settings -> select your game) and make sure triple buffering is on. This prevents the sudden frame drops  Nvidia also has a new feature called adaptive vsync which also solves the problem. Make sure your graphics driver is udpated.

Re: Y580 gaming FPS drops

Can you monitor your CPU frequency on a log file while gaming. On my Y470, when Intel Turbo Boost gets turned off and on by the BIOS CPU temp setpoint of 85 - 90 oC, I get those sudden FPS drops. Like others said, it could be v-sync since I get 80 - 110 FPS on max settings without v-sync on Torchlight 2, and I never gotten those FPS drops with v-sync off even on heavy boss battles with lots of spells and light effects.

Lenovo Y470: i7-2670QM | 8 GB DDR3 1333 MHz RAM | Nvidia GeForce GT 550M | 500 GB 7200 RPM Seagate HDD | ASUS PCE-AC56 802.11ac Network Adapter | Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
