Y580 question

If I buy the configuration which is now on sale (the one with the 1 TB HD), can I install this mssd http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-CT128M4SSD3-128GB-6GBps-Internal/dp/B0085J17KA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qi... ?

Is there a slot for a mssd on the laptop that does not come with pre intalled one?

Thanks

Re: Y580 question

hi ckomili,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

The sole purpose of the mSATA SSD drive is to cache data. For Windows 7, Lenovo use Rapid Drive to merge the two drives (HDD and SSD) to cache data. For Windows 8, they have a modified BIOS to enable the Intel Smart Response Technology (this is a feature of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology).

The SSD that you posted is compatible for the Y580 (see page 42 of the hardware maintenance manual to access the SSD slot). You can opt install Windows 7 & follow the Rapid Drive article on how to merge the HDD and SSD drives to cache data. If you're gonna run Windows 8, you will need to clean install Windows 8 on the SSD drive and make it as your primarty drive.

You can also try to use this software (or any similar app) to migrate your OS from HDD to SSD.

Hope this helps.
