Y70-70 Touch - SSD HDD upgrade question

HI, I have the Y70 70 touch games machine. My question is, Can i upgrade the SSD HDD to a larger capacity and have all my Operating systems files transfered. I would also like install a regular HDD say one Terabit capacity. The computer is so quick and I have had this over a year and it is working with Windows 10 which is a really refreshing way of interfacing a computer.

Many Thanks in advance

RayMort

Re: Y70-70 Touch - SSD HDD upgrade question

Hi raymort  ,

Greetings.

Would you have the machine number to verify details of the system ? Check on the machine number from the sticker or check it from here ,just keep your serial number confidential.

You may upgrade your harddrive to 1 TB storage as provided on the FRU list of the hardware manual as example (item 10 / page 67) or even replace the SSHD (hybrid drive to a standard HDD with 1 TB.

On the product specification sheet of different machine type / variants of the models , as others showing different storage options and likewise optical drive choice if possible to convert to additional sata drive instead.

More about other discussions  and steps done here and here .

Take time to review the highlighted links for reference.

Update us how it works best for you .

Your question: ".... and have all my operating systems files transfered." does it mean just the operating system and not the Lenovo programs included in your unit when you first received it?

I have the same question.  I would like to upgrade the 256 GB SDD to 512 GB SDD.  Did we get a solution to this question?

Re: Y70-70 Touch - SSD HDD upgrade question

Simply put, you take an Image of the entire drive (all partitons) if you want it with all the lenovo recover stuff etc. If your machine was upgraded from an older OS such as Win 8.1 there is not point in imaging those partitions (they're not large) but useless as you're on Windows 10 now. One you have the image install the new HD you select and image (restore process) to the new drive which is blank.

When all is said and done you info/data etc is still good and valid on the original drive (SSD in your cases). This can be useful should you have a disastor with the new drive or get hit by a encrption malware like Wannacrypt. Various tools are  out there to do this that generate or come with boot CD for the restore.

But note that the mechanical HD's are a LOT SLOWER than any SSD. A hybrid HD such as Seagates SSHD which has a small SSD portion around 8GB will be faster than any regular HD. Going to a 512GB SSD is the best consistant option for your systems as performance will not be affected negatively.
