Y70-70 Touch - Spilled water on keyboard

Hi,

So i accidentally spilled water on my Y70-70 keyboard and the whole keyboard stopped functioning, but everything else are working fine. I went to a local laptop repair shop in UK and they said they have to replace the whole upper case due to the keyboard being wielded to the upper case.  I'm not sure if that is true but if it is, they said i have to pay around 211GBP or 300USD to replace the whole upper case which seem kinda expensive to me, since its only a keyboard problem.

So i just want to know if this price is normal for this model? and is it cheaper to send it back to lenovo to fix or not? Also is it true that for this model if the keyboard stop functioning, i have to replace the whole upper case? Really regret spilling water on my keyboard now Smiley Sad

Anyway, i look forward to a reply.

Thanks

Peter

Re: Y70-70 Touch - Spilled water on keyboard

No Idea on cost. I can see the keyboard being damaged although it may have worked once dried out. It was water and no pop or booze which is worst. Welded unlikely but was it a authorize Lenovo shop if not then thats it.

Re: Y70-70 Touch - Spilled water on keyboard

Hi peterchung ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

This such incidents like liquid spills are ones covered by Lenovo Accidental Damage Warranty upgrade wherein both parts and labor are covered .

Moving forward , if you have the machine number from the sticker or check it from here, we would be able to get the part number specific to the upper case with keyboard. Same part numbers listed on the FRU listing on the hardware maintainance manual (item2 page 66) . A quick search on ebay for a brand new upper case with part number 5CB0G59766 showed me US $300.00 similar to this for a Grade A or this one for US $119.99 . You can use the part number to search on your location.

You may also call in Lenovo tech support  (English 0333-777-3991 (National Rate) 9:00 - 18:00 Monday - Friday ) for pricing and availability to compare.

If you have the tools and skill , take time to review the manual (page 54) and I have here also the service training guide for disassembly as reference ( maybe we can save some labor cost as long as you take your time to review those ) .

Hope this answered your query and likewise find the guides helpful.

Update us how it would work best for you.

Regards

Re: Y70-70 Touch - Spilled water on keyboard

Hi, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, i have left it for 1 week already and the keyboard still not responding. And yeah i bought this laptop from an authorize Lenovo shop and i'm still under normal warranty which i don't think it covers accidental damage.

Re: Y70-70 Touch - Spilled water on keyboard

there are various ways of dealing with clearing with water damage and other spills. Depends how much went in. Removing the back options covers where memory and drive are and battery is part of it. This allows air in to move around. the more open the better.

Using rice wrapped in cloth bag (you don't want it in the system) placed with the notebook in a plastic bag. Zip lock type if big enough. Leave them together kept warm at least.

Rice absorbs moisture, so you can check after a couple of days if it works.

Re: Y70-70 Touch - Spilled water on keyboard

Hi

Many thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my laptop is with the local repair centre at the moment and the guys are now off work, so i couldn't ask for the part number at the moment.

I did call lenovo service about my problem and they said i can use https://www.medion.com/lenovoserviceshop/ to buy spare parts or send it back to lenovo for repair. If i send it back, they said it will take 1 month till i get my laptop back which is not very convenient for me as i really need my laptop during this period.

Although i do not have the part number, i do have my serial number. Using this website https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/partslookup1 i still can't find the keyboard FRU no. but i assume its "Upper Case C Y70-70T W/KB-T-CH" or "Upper Case C Y70-70T W/KB-UK" from p66 the manual guide that you have provided me. I also typed in Y70 on the lenovo service shop from medion and found two parts from the "Housing components" section which i assume is the upper case or keyboard part as stated in the discription but i'm not certain if i'm correct or not.

Part1 :https://www.medion.com/lenovoserviceshop/search?msn=55087706

Part2 :https://www.medion.com/lenovoserviceshop/search?msn=35019980&uesc=cw%253D%2526mt%253D%2526ms%253D550...

These parts states it cost around 37.15GBP which seems significantly cheaper than the ebay once or the once that my local repair service guy have suggested. So i hope you can guide me that this is the correct part i'm looking at. If it is i might ask my local repair guy to help me order and install for me with the assembly guide that you have provided.

Anyway, thanks once again for the information and look forward to your reply soon.

Kind Regards,

Peter

Re: Y70-70 Touch - Spilled water on keyboard

Hi peterchung ,

Aside from tripplec suggestions, it would also help if you just keep using it with an external USB keyboard as it heats up the circuit board since it just water and not some sticky soda.

You have the manuals above for reference . Here on the parts lookup page you can get your machine number and upper case part number you can check (or on the sticker). Just keep your serial number confidential and if you want to send me a private message to check for you.

Hope this helps . Update us.

Regards
