Z50-75 switching itself off

I bought a Z50-75 a few months ago. Occasionally it switches itself off without any warning at all. Sometimes this happens a couple of minutes after switching on, sometimes after 30 mins, most times it doesn't happen. I don't move the laptop around much so I don't think it is a problem with overheating (else why is there such a variance in behaviour ?) Does anyone have any idea why this is happening ? Thanks.

Re: Z50-75 switching itself off

Hi there, Bridgeman –

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Do you leave the notebook doing some work? Is any task being scheduled for running or you just leave it idle?

Regarding RAM, you could run Memtest or a similar software to check that the RAM is working fine. You need to leave memtest running for a while, let it do two or three passes.

Also, I would try to run any tool to check the health of the HDD.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Z50-75 switching itself off

Thanks for your reply.

No, there is no scheduled task running in the background. RAM is fine, as is the health of the hard disk, but I'll maybe check using Memtest. As I said originally, it is a very intermittent fault which only happens once or twice every few weeks without any warning whatsoever. There are usually one or two programs running at the time but nothing especially memory demanding ... certainly no gaming software with heavy graphics use etc.. Very strange !

Re: Z50-75 switching itself off

I downloaded memtest from herehttp://www.memtest86.com/download.htm, is this what you meant by memtest?

Have you installed all Windows updates? I would also install Lenovo System update and run it to get the latest drivers as well.

Now let me ask you some questions about the swap of the heatsink you did. Did you renew the thermal paste below it? Are you sure the heatsink is properly sitting on the CPU socket?

Update us how it goes.
