Z510 - nvidia graphic card glitches constantly, BIOS flash back?

2017-11-12, 20:58 PM

i updated my bios from v38 to v40, after lenovo technical service renew my motherboard, hdd and ram. And than nvidia graphic card start glitching constantly. For example when i open a game first game crash and screen freeze than computer do not response. i sent my computer 3 times because of that problem but all the time technical service told me there is no problem at all.

i have two theory about what cause to problem. First there is a physical malfunction on the motherboard. Second one is that after i updated bios problems started so it is about bios.

What should i do? i believe that if i can backflash my bios version, problem will be gone

i live in Turkey and unfortunately Turkish technical support shelve about my problem. Worst thing is that i can not use my problem anymore. i am a student and i can not afford new machine

Re: Z510 - nvidia graphic card glitches constantly, BIOS flash back?

I am not an expert by any means, but will try to shed a light on this.

Your laptop is close to (more or less) three years old . I dont know wether you bought it new or from a third person...but it was launched by the the middle/end of 2014.

You know every electronics or even mechanical parts have a life time. Laptops`s lifetime are even more sensible to the use you make out of it.

My questions are: Do you have the habit of monitoring the temps? if so, how were them across the monthes/ years? They were supposed to get hotter as the thermal compound got old, did you change them to another compound? If so, did you install a top thermal compound?

I am not sure if this is the case, but it looks like you are facing a FC BGA problem! it might be either the chip or the memory chips (looks more like memory than the processor/engine itself!!). These artifacts are either the flip chips that`s going bad or the solderings(memory or processor). Try deactivating the geforce in windows forcing it to use the internal hd graphics (set power options to energy save - this will guarantee the temperature dont get too hot). See if it still happens.

Maybe this will guarantee you can at least use your laptop if the graphics has gone bad. And if it`s the geforce graphics chip that`s gone bad, my advice to you is - what ever you do, don`t stress the chip, dont make the temps vary high and low, high and low too much. Use the hd graphics instead and dont forget all the things i said before.

I once had a lot of problems with graphics chip on laptops before. I had a gaming notebook which GPU got dead and i took it to an assistance whose owner was once a manufacturer and he explained to me all the negative side of gaming laptops. It was around 2012,2013. I dont know how the technology is today, but at those days, he told me plain and simple - 'if you want to game, avoid laptops'

Thank you so much first. This is a three years old notebook but Turkish Lenovo technical servise changed all the components of this computer 1 years ago on warranty. Thats why i assume that this is an unexpected problem in first 1 year.

Could you clarify the Fc BGA problem a little bit more?

And i think you said a mouthful reason about my problem. i agree with you. So do you have any suggestion to me like applying thermal absorber on something or if i change something can i solve my problem?

Re: Z510 - nvidia graphic card glitches constantly, BIOS flash back?

Understood.

So i think they might have done that already. It`s always good to confirm. Just in case. Just try to confirm if they changed all the thermal compounds. And check if they done something with the BGAs.

BGA means ball grid array. GPUs and CPUs have two types basically of connection to the motherboard. One is the pins (which is called PGA - pin grid array something like that).  And the other one is BGA - ball grid array. Notebooks GPU and CPUs are mostly made of BGA. The difference between BGA and PGA basically is that BGA is soldered balls.

In the start of the years 2000 there was a law reinforcing people to stop using lead based compound on the soldering. So the science developed a new material based of copper, silver, gold, something like that in which they call lead free solder. The lead-free solder has a higher melting pont than the lead based solder. You might question youself 'so why do we have trouble with BGA soldering it the melting point is higher which means it is more resistant?'. The answer is that simply what we need is flexibility. AS the temperatures raise and drop, raise and drop, raise and drop... the materials expand and reduce. Just like a car engine(the pistons, rods and so on were designed to work on a certain temperature because the materials geometries changes when it reaches that temperature in which all the project was designed to fully operate). So we have those raises and drops on temperatures, the solderings and the chip expand and reduce until the point in which we may see damages due to the material lead-free being HARD and not flexible like lead based was.

I dont know what exactly they replaced in your laptop! But i would certainly ask them what exactly they did. Ask if they replaced the BGA with new balls(they could have done something wrong in this process as it is very sensible to mistakes), if they replaced the memory or if they did anything with memory  chips......again, this so looks a lot like memory chips corrupted (but it could the BGA too)....

Another question is that mentioned about bios. Was that YOU that did it or them? And the bios is the offical released by them or was it just another unofficial customized or anything like that?

i asked them what did you change exactly. They just told me that we changed ram, motherboard and hdd. When i try to learn what they did, they did not give me more detailed answer than that. They always tell me if you have another problem send the machine again.

actually, you must be right about memory or memory chips because i get video memory errors.

and about bios, after they sent my machine back, i just boot it and updated bios because i asked them to update bios for me because of cpu speed stuck problem and they told me to it myself and i just did it. i did not use the machine till i update bios and after that i could not get rid of from this problem.

i dont know should i sent the machine back to them because of same problem fourth time?

maybe if i can figure out what cause the problem, i would tell them what they exactly need to do or i can fix it on my own

From what you have told me I would bet that the memory they installed is causing these artifacts. May be or stick or both. You could test it your own. Get an app like mem test and run it. Or take a stick out and test each one.... I don't know. If it would brake your warranty.... Better of doing the mem test and getting back to them
