Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

Hi.

When i install the latest intel drivers from their website for my HD4000 the brighness control on my Z580 stops working correctly, then if i re-install the lenovo video driver it starts working again, what have lenovo done to their driver? can the Intel Website driver be modded this way?

This is for Windows 7 x64

Re: Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

Hi Tinderbox
The thing is that the drivers posted by Lenovo at their site owever the one at the intel site are are made for not any specific laptop but for many supporting laptops. Also, if we are satisfied by the current state of the computer, there is never a need of updating anything.
I hope you understand.

Re: Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

So how long can i expect updates to the video driver for new games or general fixes a year or two before my notebook is no longer supported, if i could use normal intel website drivers i would get support for a lot longer.

Is there a utility to check for new driver for my Z580 notebook as it did not come with one that i can find.

Thanks

Re: Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

Does the brightness control stop working all together, OR only the On Screen Display?  See this thread:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/y570-Brightness-bar-not-moving/m-p/630893#M...

AFAIK Lenovo will never update the original Intel Video driver, after they have modified it for their On Screen Display, and shipped the laptop out.

You have 2 options:

1. Update the driver from the Intel site, and live with the frozen OSD. The Fn+Up/Down still works for me to control the brightness. Only the OSD does not move. You can also go into the control panel, to adjust the brightness.

2. Maintain your original Lenovo display driver. Just make sure you don't update your Win 7 OS automatically, or check all updates after they're loaded. Updates for the Intel video driver are included in the Windows update scheme.

I use option 1 above. I don't care if the OSD moves, as long as the actual brightness increases/decreases.

Go to: http://support.lenovo.com/en_GB/ for your driver updates. You can subscribe to the RSS feed, for changes to your machines driver page.

Cheers

Re: Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

I have the RSS feed, but most other manufactures have an driver/software update utility

I can adjust the brightness up and down with the Fn  and arrow keys and i get the osd moving and the brighness changes, but when i restart the notebook my display is at it`s lowest brighness setting, it does not remember my settings.

The built in Win7 display brighness adjuster in power options stops working when i use non the non lenovo driver.

Thanks

Re: Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

Check your Lenovo Energy Management Details. I bet you have it set at a "lower" brightness on Battery, or Plugged In. That is the reason it "reverts" back to a lower setting, on every boot.

Re: Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

I cannot find those settings i only have  "power management options", even on battery they do not show up.

EDIT : I found this guide online, i have part 1, but not part 2?

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-S-series-Netbooks/Ideapad-Series-Lenovo-Energy-Management-for-Wi...

I also tried download the latest energy mangment software, but on installing it, i was told it was already installed.

Thanks

Re: Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

Under All Programs > Lenovo > Energy Management > Power Management, don't you have a screen similar to this? Click on the blue wheel, to get the details page for your plan. (My image above)

EnergyMgtPower.PNG

You may have to "enable" the Lenovo Power Management in the Windows Power scheme.

EnableEnergyMgt.PNG

If you don't have the Lenovo Energy Management programs, I'm at a loss. Of course, I'm working on a Y470, so I really don't know about what Lenovo ships these days! Smiley LOL

Edit on your Edit: Yeah, that's the ticket. You "should" be able to work on this program (Energy Management) if you already have it installed. Make sure you check "Enable" in the Win Power before you try the Lenovo EM options.

Cheers

Re: Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

John,

I know this is a bit confusing, but I think you are using the "Power Options" from the Win Control Panel. After clicking on the Power Options, click on "Change Plan Settings", then "Change Advanced Plan Settings" Under the advanced setting, click on "Lenovo Energy Management" tab, and "Enable Lenovo.." Be sure to apply, and close all windows.

You should now be able to change your plan under the Lenovo programs. in the start menu. I have my plan on High Performance, Best Battery Health, because I always have it plugged in.

Cheers,

DragonRider

Re: Z580 - How can i use Intel Website video drivers and keep the brightness control working?

Thnaks dragoak

I must have a different version of Lenovo Energy Mangment on my Z580 and i have the latest software from the Lenovo website, as i dont get the options you get, see large image in link below.

When i click on enable lenovo energy mangment, i get the picture in the link below.

if i click in the battery or wrench icon i only get very basic option, not the extensive options you get.
